That's too bad. Good coach and seemed like a good man.
He is a great man. Nobody here should be calling him a "good" coach though. Simply because his record at Minnesota. What's his career win percentage there?

Wow, and they don't even have an AD there yet.

I wonder if sentiment will be just to promote one of the assistants long term and keep that staff together that's had like a 20 year run, or start fresh with someone from the outside?

His lifetime winning percentage is pretty damn good when you consider the places that he's been. A couple of DII/low-level stops, then he went to Southern Illinois when they were on the verge of dropping football and turned them into a perennial FCS playoff team (in the toughest league in that division), then took over a wreck of a program at Northern Illinois and started the juggernaut that they became. Minnesota had been awful for 50 years before he went there.

His career record is 152-99, and he never coached anywhere with any kind of history of success before he got there.

His resume looks like Vince Lombardi compared to anything that Mike Riley has ever done.

You think Riley inherited a bad situation but Kill doesn't get credit for turning Minnesota into a B1G division contender. He inherited an absolute dumpster fire from Brewster. He overall record is 29-29 but Brewster was 15-30 and lost to South Dakota in his final year. Kill improved every program he took over. I never said he was a GREAT coach, but he is a good coach.

All I am interested with is his last stop. That's when he got to a power 5 school (one that has won National titles in the past) He is a .500 coach. That's all that matters.

I will just say that I think Jerry Kill was a good football guy, and I respect him. I hope he has a lot more healthy years left. I will just step aside and watch all the haters faces melt off, and try to spin their hate. Have a good day.

Yeah, they won a bunch of titles in the '30s. So did Princeton and Yale. Let's just ignore the fact that Minnesota's last conference title was in 1967 and their last major bowl appearance was the 1962 Rose.

JFC.

Edit: and it's factually incorrect to call him a .500 coach. That would be Mike Riley. Kill's career record is closer to .667.

Relatively speaking, Coach Kill is a good coach. Refute it all you want, but I think it's not going out on a limb saying he would probably be more successful than our last 3 and current coach. What do I speculate that on? His philosophy is solid defense with smash mouth offense and featuring the TE to hand out punishment in the passing game. What more could we ask for? Best health to Coach Kill.

Tracy Claeys (sp?) will be interim head coach. unless a big name would show interest, which imo is very doubtful, i expect Claeys will be the next head coach. he took over for Kill when he previously missed games due to health reasons. don't forget, minny is still without an AD. naming Claeys would give minny some sense of continuity.

Jerry Kill has done a great job at Minny. His 2013-14 teams flat out bullied Nebraska, especially in the 4th quarters.
Did they get our 9-win trophies for that?

i would suggest that if you were not able to watch Jerry Kill's press conference, take about 40 minutes and do so. imo, there are some pretty powerful segments included. i know he has some health issues that complicate matters, but, still....

Well you certainly have been noticed in this thread, but not sure your comments about Kill are at a .500 level.

Claeys is an excellent coach, and really, I think the source of much of Kill's success. But I don't know if he has the personality where he wants to be the front man on a regular basis. He seems about as quiet of a guy that you'll see in the coaching business. If he would take the gig, Minneapolis would be stupid to not run with him. Although, I can't imagine he would work the boosters or recruits very well.

I think 463 is just snarkily pointing out that if Riley can't catch a break on his career record (ie circumstances don't matter) then Kill won't get one either. Judged soley on Win PCT, Kill is not a great coach.

If Coach Kill is not a good coach, then we all need to realize how bad of a Coach Bo Pelini was. Just Sayin.

How many coaches in the history of the game have been around for 20 years or more and have a winning percentage of .667 or better?

Tom Osborne and Bob Devaney are not the benchmarks for being considered a "great" football coach.
