The Weather Guy is less than a mile from my son's home, and about 20 miles from the Clemson stadium where Clemson plays Notre Dame tonight. The area is looking at more than a foot of rain.

The most obnoxious weather drama queen

I think that's unfair. Cantore single-handedly created a genre - before he came along, the idea of somebody standing on a beach in the teeth of a landfalling hurricane was the stuff of crazy Southerners too poor to afford cameras (but invariably well-stocked with beer).

Weather queens were stupidly reporting the obvious (i.e., it's windy and rainy during a hurricane) long before the weather channel; they just went mass media with it...as I always tell my students, one day you will witness a live decapitation, or someone getting pulled out to sea because they were at the shore during the onset of a storms' surge or really badly injured because they somehow felt the need to report on what the most casual of observers knows...there's bad weather out there!

I fully accept that my profession is full of attention seekers...thankfully I can make my own forecasts and consult data bases at real science web sites (NWS and NOAA and never weather.com...ever) so I don't have to rely on the media...that being said these people do have quite the creepy/culty following! Kind of like State Penn... ;-)

As some may know, I was born in the South. I have deep roots, there. I was well familiarized with the concept of frolicking about in live hurricanes before most other kids my age were allowed to cross the street alone.

Everyone nurtures their own flavor of 'crazy'. It's part of what makes this country great.

He's not a reporter but I know a guy who just had to go and check out the ocean prior to Sandy's hit at night no less. He was hit by a wave and ended up spending the night at the ER. Luckily for him it was only a separated shoulder but as he now admits, could have been a lot worse.

People can call me a wuss or whatever but one thing I've learned after 25 years at the beach is don't challenge mother nature.

I was down in Point about an hour ago. It's pretty bad at the beach. The Inlet was starting to already spill over into the road.

I didn't even get out of the car. Let the wife and boy venture up to the boardwalk. LOL
