Wow, what took so long? Only the HC of one of the two biggest upsets in NCAA history (the other being Villanova taking down Georgetown).
Really? More than Farleigh Dickinson beating outright Big Ten champions Purdue? Have you ever seen FDUs campus

"Against man-to-man defense, Rutgers often ran an isolation play for Lloyd called 14-low (Lloyd wore No. 14). It was painfully simple: The other four players would stand along the baseline while Lloyd worked his magic.

Once, Foster chastised Valvano for failing to distract his man, who came out to double the All-American.

“Coach, I’m standing one foot away from the tuba player,” Valvano replied. “What am I supposed to do, fake the tuba out?”"

“He had all these routines he would go through — these songs, these jokes,” said Greacen, then a sophomore forward and later an NBA player. “When the bus would get off the Turnpike and get on Route 18 he would start singing, ‘New Brunswick, New Brunswick’ (to the tune of Frank Sinatra’s ‘Chicago, Chicago’) and everybody would sing it. It was really memorable.”

I think the implication was upsets in a title/championship game, not necessarily all games.

Anyway, NAIA Chaminade over NCAA D1 and No. 1 Virginia in 1982 will likely never be topped.

Congratulations to his family but I was never a big fan.
I remember that book. I think @Plum Street has a typo and meant to say "kids in the school that couldn't read. Chris Washburn is the guy who comes to mind immediately.
Jimmy V was a shady character who had a geat personality. He did a lot to raise cancer awareness and may he rest in peace but I didn't like him as a coach. Just a personal opinion.

Because he was slimy as hell. For a fanbase here that wants to win the right way, Valvano represented so much that is wrong with college athletics. He put kids in school that couldnt read

I figured you would be the one to take this slant. Always the one to take a positive and make it negative. Some choose to not speak I'll of the dead. Some believe in redemption. Obviously the Naismith Hall of Fame thought what he achieved was worthy.

One game…no. But this was the equivalent of a Nebraska this year winning the conf tourney, making the dance and just win out.

Someone asked as question and I answered it . How is that not fair ?

Let me ask you this: would you want a rutgers coach to run his program the way valvano ran nc state ?

Yep Washburn . But there were many in that program like Washburn . He also stole stereos in dorms and jimmy v was all
About jimmy w.
Here is a good story about Washburn :

“Former State center Chris Washburn, says Golenbock, scored a combined 470 on his SATs (you get 400 for simply signing in), and while in school, was once being tutored for a geography test. ''The tutor asked,'' writes Golenbock,

'' `What is the country directly south of the United States?` Washburn thought a minute and said, `Canada.` The tutor said, `No, they speak Spanish. Maybe that will help.` Washburn responded, `Spain?` When he was asked what country was directly north of the U.S., his answer was, `England?` ''

I saw Valvano speak at a clinic the year after they won the NC. Very entertaining and had some funny stories but all he added to the clinic basketball wise was that didn't believe in running drills in practice. Instead all they did is scrimmage teaching on the fly and shoot foul shots.
Thought that was odd.

Geography is a difficult subject remembering names and where they are located .

Also wasn't Charles Shackelford involved in a point shaving scandal?
