Do we really think Mullen would jump to the Big Orange knowing that there are good chances they are about to face major sanctions?

UT has the money to get whatever they want. My money is on Sly Croom, Bob Toledo, Willie Totten, or Charlie Weis..... Should be fun to watch

a program after one year after what Kiffin just did...

They are going after stability - someone with UT history.

My bet is that they will go after Cutcliff very hard.

that Kiffin would eventually do something stupid, like lose five games in a season, and UT would make Mullen their next head coach. The list of high profile assistants with HC potential and UT ties is not what it used to be.

Does he still have health concerns though? That could be a big negative. I wonder if he's simply happy with the stress level he has at Duke and would turn down a UT offer just so he doesn't have to deal with it.

to make a huge splash hire. They are going to feel the need to try and save face. I bet they pull out all the stops to lure a proven winner away from his respective program.

I don't think Mullen would even be on the radar for UT. Mullen as a 1st year HC with a 5-7 record and therefore would not qualify as a slash hire.

By the way, what has Kiffin ever done to deserve this kind of coaching respect. I have no idea how he even got a pro HC gig (was he ever a HC before that anywhere?)in which he failed, then gets hired by one of the biggest programs in the country, UT (do they still have the biggest stadium?) and does very mediocre, and now an even more high profile program hires him. What am I missing about him?

They would be hiring Mullen in the same way Kiffin left them, Tenn fans would never trust him. Not going to happen.

and after initially worrying about Nutt because of Sexton's UT ties, I feel the same way about him. They want to make a "splash," and though that's tough to define I don't think either Mullen or Nutt would qualify as they are on the ends of the coaching spectrum. One is young, energetic but relatively inexperienced and one is old, tired, and in the twilight of his career.

Tennessee's early list
11:30

Tennessee Volunteers Top Email

UPDATE: ESPN The Magazine's Bruce Feldman thinks Tennessee has to make a run at Duke coach David Cutcliffe.

***

It's all really speculative at this point, but our job is to report what we're hearing and being tipped on, so here we go.

Potential Vols' candidates
Troy Calhoun, Air Force: The Vols were high on him last year before they hired Kiffin.
David Cutcliffe, Duke: Tutored Peyton Manning, had two stints with Vols, most recently as offensive coordinator in 2007 and turned around the program in Durham.
Will Muschamp, Texas: If this defensive ace is tired of waiting for Mack Brown to retire, this is his chance. Also, has SEC experience with Auburn.
Steve Spurrier, South Carolina: His super competitive side might be looking for a change since he hasn't been able to make the Gamecocks into an SEC contender -- yet.
Gary Patterson, TCU: He just signed an extension, but this could be his first chance at major conference job.
Chris Petersen, Boise State: Was contacted by USC, but some questions about whether he's a good fit at these big schools.
Butch Davis, North Carolina: The former Miami coach won't miss a beat on the recruiting trail, and was linked to the job last year before Kiffin was hired.
Randy Edsall, Connecticut: Was mentioned for the Notre Dame and Kansas jobs, too.
Kirby Smart, Alabama DC: We said he was a hot coaching candidate in 2011. Why not now?
Jim Leavitt and Mike Leach: We don't buy these names quite yet.
As ESPN.com's Pat Forde said tonight, Tennessee is obviously at "square one" right now. It's rare that a superpower like the Vols would be blindsided like this, but then again, it happened to USC -- and they paid it forward. And to the chagrin of many in Knoxville, the Trojans have a new coach.

So as the Vols search for a new coach, one hot name out there is Troy Calhoun of Air Force. Both Sports Illustrated's Stewart Mandel and Rivals.com's Tom Dienhart threw out his name, because before Tennessee hired Lane Kiffin last year, they were thinking about hiring Calhoun, who was the Houston Texans' offensive coordinator before he took over at Air Force.

I hope Butch Davis stays at North Carolina. That would be a hell of a hire for UT. And he is no stranger to gun carrying football players since im sure he had a ton of them at Miami.

Would hate to see them get Patterson too. I was hoping Patterson got a hard look for the State job just like I hoped Brian Kelly would when he was at Cincy after Croom was ran off.

I hope TN winds up with a lot of dissappointments and a hire that is way down the list. Those 17ers deserve it after they were high fiveing each other after Kiffin's antics to stir up Georgia and Florida.

And it's all because of recruiting/location. Florida, USC, and Texas are smack dab in the middle of some of the most talented recruiting areas in all America. It's cold as *%+@ in ND plus admission standards. UTenn truly has to recruit nationwide and it takes a special coach to be able to pull it off. Fulmer used to have it and seemed to have lost the edge.

Tier 1 Programs -
USC, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU

Tier 2 - should have maybe 2x to 3x the amount of teams as Tier 1 and I would put UTenn on the bottom half of it.
Georgia, Auburn, Va Tech, Miami, FSU, Ohio State, ND, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, Nebraska, UTenn
