If we wait for Trenton to solve the problem, the Rutgers Administration to solve the problem, we'll all be DEAD by the time that happens. It is time to take matters into our own hands and solve the problem for OURSELVES.

First, We can work with Doug Dolan, Marco and others of the Rutgers Foundation to launch the Rutgers Football Excellence Fund in order to land an ELITE coach. This is to pay for Rutgers Football Coaching salaries in 2017 or sooner, if we see fit.

This is no opportunity for on the job training, because our coach is going to be going up against Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, James Franklin and other elite coaches right off the bat. To give us a better opportunity for success, we NEED an elite coach of our own. As long as one of our esteemed board members agrees, we can have dinners at northern nj museum at $1,000 per plate. The ultimate goal is to raise $5 Million dollars. Thats 5,000 fans need to give 1,000. I think I can solicit pledges just by going through the scarlet, yellow, and blue lots. People spend $1K on their tailgates alone. Also, Look at all the Audi's, Mercedes', BMW's, and Lexus' in our tailgate lots.

Our fans have money, they just have to be convinced that we have an excellent stategy that they can support and have faith in. In 48 hours we raised $8K using our change. If we all work together, we can get this done.

Our strategy is to raise enough funds to pay a high caliber coach of national repute. Examples might include coaches like:
  • John Harbaugh
  • Chip Kelly
  • similar coaches
I cited these coaches, as there are rumours that they might be moving on at some point, as shown in the below link. We need a coach whose name generates instant respect and admiration among fans, opponents, and especially recruits. Our present strategy is not going to generate the result we want. Its time for a new direction.

Al, I have been down this road with Rutgers before. I was told that we needed to come up with enough money to endow coaching positions. That means enough money in an investment that will produce enough yearly income to completely pay for the coach's salary plus any future increases without touching the principal.

Good luck!!!

An elite coach plus assistant coaches pay will be in the $10M a year range as a round number. If the the original deal is for 5 years you will need at least $50M upfront and each year fund raise enough so when the 5 year deal is up the coach can be renewed or another elite coach can be hired.

I like your thinking and if the school would back it and an elite coach could be found I would donate $1,000 but you would need a lot of people willing to do it.

The school just denied money being donated and you think another Rutgers football fund can be started for a coaching search? What the hell is wrong with you.

So all we need is a Super Bowl winning coach. Who knew? Don Shula is available.

This fund has a Different scope. This fund will seek to cover the 2017 Rutgers Football Head Coach salary, a cause they can support.

Getting John Harbaugh here would be amazing. However, there is just no way in hell we could ever beat or match this current salary of $7 million per year.

Harbaugh would be amazing. While my instinct is to just say it's too lofty a goal, I also get Al's point that that kind of thinking is what has landed us in the position we're in.

Tell ya what.......if there is some sort of endowment/fund established for the purposes of raising money for an elite coach, I'm in for $1,000 Al.

How about Gene Chizik, he is currently Def Coordinator at UNC, earning I believe $750k? He won National Championship with Auburn with Cam Newton.

I don't know why people are poo-poo'ing Al on this. The reason that a big-name coach is unlikely to come here now is because we are most likely unwilling to pay the going rate. Why not have a trackable fund through the RU Foundation for the purpose of funding a head coach? Nothing listed about firing a coach or anything like that. But a fund that is designed to help RU pay for coaches salaries. Build this fund up, and then when needed RU can make a change if they see fit.

John Harbaughs contract is thru 2016. If things continue like the way they are, with the Ravens currently 2-6, he may not be there much longer. I feel like $5 Million is what we can raise, and ultimately pay. Jim Harbaugh makes $5 million base. Bob Stoops makes $5.0 million. If not John Harbaugh, $5 million would get us an excellent coach.

If you want to be serious about this, contact Rutgers 1st. Talk to them about creating a fund to endow the Football HC position at Rutgers.

Many schools have endowed coaching jobs.

Al, I'm with you on this one. But please stipulate that 2017 coaching salaries will be funded with the exclusion of Flood. I just don't trust this imbecile minded RU leadership. Put me in for a grand. I hope you're keeping track of the pledges in this thread. We need a superstar - a rock star - a stud. We deserve it!

Getting an elite coach is a longterm process. Let's just focus first on getting a good coach. You build the program up, you increase expectations and giving... and you'll naturally be able to attract/afford an elite coach. We're nowhere near that right now, but hey, there's probably only a dozen programs that are, so let's relax and focus on a good hire who can lead us to that mark.

How many Jim Harbaughs are available? Also, how many Jim Harbaughs would be interested to coach at RU?

jim's not available, but john might very well soon be. but i'm resigned to the fact that our fanbase just doesn't want to pay up. so we do the best we can. i'll be happy with whatever decision the decision makers make.

I want Bill Belichick as coach. His son came to Rutgers so why wouldn't he retire from the NFL and coach PT at Rutgers.

Yeah of course. And I understood what you meant Al but realistically speaking, what are the odds an established elite coach would feel like joining RU which may be currently the equivalent of a project car

I'd pledge $1k if I knew for sure it RU was going to bring in an elite coach, and they needed our pledges to do so. I bet a lot of people would.

i think, we put enough zeroes at the end of the check, we'll get anyone we want. NJ is a great place to live with some of the wealthiest townships and best school systems in the country. everybody likes to complain, but frankly i don't think there is a better place out there. yes the taxes are high, but so is our standard of living.

Columbus, ohio for example is a place that you couldn't pay me to live in. but once you walk through the gates of ohio state, you know you're in a special place. They have an elite coach, because winning is more important to OSU fans than it is to Rutgers fans.

Facilities wise- what we could really use is a state of the art $50-$100 million football facility, but what we have now is good enough.

This can be the best job in the country with the right coach. most everyone we need to win a National Championship is within an hour of campus. recruit a few from florida, a few from california each year and we're blowing OSU and UM into the goddamn weeds. Who else has that?

we've got a long way to go, but it doesn't change the fact that we've come a long way. the only thing we're missing is commitment to be the best. the right coach can ultimately foster that kind of commitment. once we get that, everything else will fall into place.

Good idea, but given that when Julie and Sara got here, we had a little over 5,000 donors to RU athletics and now have a little over 9,000, getting any decent number of people contributing $1,000 seems pretty unlikely.

we've got a large alumni base which is mostly untapped. we've got a huge opportunity, and huge potential market. the coaching hire is going to be key.
