Reinforcements are coming.

Nebraska senior cornerback Chris Jones and senior safety Joshua Kalu have both been cleared and will play against No. 9 Wisconsin on Saturday night, head coach Mike Riley told reporters Thursday.

Jones is the bigger surprise, having torn his left meniscus in mid-July. At that point, he was given a 4-6 month recovery timetable, but his return to action will come after less than 2 1/2. He first donned a helmet last week and was first cleared for contact Monday.

Where are the Message board MD's that guaranteed CJ wouldn't be back until November and should just take a medical RS?? Welcome back Chris. You are much needed with at least 7 games left.

I stand by the fact that he shouldn't be playing yet. Biologically, the meniscus isn't ready.

I agree, but it's his body, so as long as he is not hurting the team by playing, I will cheer him on and hope he helps kick some butt!

Say he re-injures it while playing Saturday night, would he consider a med-red shirt and come back next year? I assume he would, unless he has plans to attempt to go pro next year.

Can't imagine his draft stock would be high coming off a season where he appeared in part of one game and tearing up his knee twice.

Then what are the doctors doing clearing him?

No idea what is happening behind closed doors, all I can say is that typically 4 months is the earliest athletes are allowed to return to any cutting/pivoting after a meniscus repair. Some studies suggest that it's only at 50% strength at 6 months. If he retears it, theyll have to remove it, he'll be out another 6 weeks and the whole season was lost for him for nothing.

Well, if he does get hurt again soon, technically it might not be for not percentage wise

If they take it out he'll be fine until he's 40 or so.

Ultimately if it's not a life threatening situation, it's the kid's decision. I think Shine has a good handle on this and probably knows more than he can share. Cartilage takes a loooong time to heal completely. I hope to hell he doesn't jeopardize his future aspirations for one game. Same thing for Kalu although his probably entails less permanent risk.

I'm sure he's been made aware of all of the risks, limitations, etc. Not my knee, not my decision. Hope it works out for him and the team.

I just hope Jones isn't chasing $$$ to get drafted this year, if he isn't ready to go and full rehab would imply an even healthier, less risky shot next year to be drafted even higher.
