Well... that's not good. One of the most experienced players out for pretty much the entire season.

Another loss before the season even begins Big Bummer. Only positive is that we have time to build the secondary during fall camp and see who steps up before the season opener.

I wonder if he would be open to redshirting this year? He might not make it back until December and not playing this season would only hurt his chances in the NFL Draft.

I am hoping for a speedy recovery but who knows how quickly he will recover to play in an actual game.

Best player on the defense, possibly the entire team, out? Yikes...
Between this news, KJJr, and the non-qualifiers, this season hasn't started out too hot.

Yes it is coming, can't get here soon enough.
Diaco's job just got a LOT tougher. Bootle etal are going to have to step up. This opens up a quarter of the field for opposing offenses. I don't think there's more than a couple of teams nationally that have the kind of depth to replace a kid like this.

They'll redshirt him I'm sure. If he recovers well, they can just pull it. At that point I'm willing to bet they'll give him the choice.

I would think he would almost have to come back if he wants to get drafted. Tough break. The NFL loves potential but there's too many healthy guys out there to pick from in the draft. Come back or try to sign as an UDFA. Tough decision.

True. It's coming, but this year may be tough.

yes it is unfortunate but thankfully Riles has had 3 recruiting classes -- if we are so razor thin at CB why did we only take a single DB in last years class - knowing (at least most programs knew) that it would be extremely unlikely that he would be available for 2017.

I'm hoping Lee steps up as he did in the spring.

Not many teams have 3 deep in guys at corner that end up being starter quality. Losing Blades to academics and now Jones to injury is tough. We were ok but now we can't afford any more CB injuries or somebody will have to play the whole game. You will note that Riley sent his DB coach and DC packing perhaps partly because of their recruiting shortcomings.

We must have felt pretty good about the secondary if we essentially decided we weren't going to take any secondary players in last years class

This obviously sucks but this has to get Eric Lee fired up.. kid just got his opportunity to prove his worth. Hopefully he stepped up like so many people were talking about this spring

I don't think it was a decision by Riley to only take one CB thus we have a new CB coach who is a good recruiter. I also think some of Banker getting canned was this failure. I get it. You're laying Jone's injury and Blades' failure to qualify and the resulting pinch it puts us in at Riley's feet. Go for it but just quit beating around the bush and tell us how you really feel about Riley.

Did we really decide not to take players? As in, we didn't even ask? I could have sworn we had offers out to DBs... guess I was wrong.

So much for people's predictions of he can keep right on playing, it'll just be a little sore. IMO they should move Kalu back to CB unless he's just the truth at safety. Gonna be as thin at DB as they have been on DL. Sucks.

I like Rikey a lot. I am just not willing to put asterisks behind the win-loss record in year three. I am not laying any injuries on Riley - I am ultimately laying the win-loss record and finish in division and conference on him now that we are in year 3. An injury to a CB in July shouldn't change that.

It also is on the head coach to hire assistants - glad he is willing to make changes but you aren't granted mulligans when you replace coaches. He had plenty of time (decades) with Banker to determine if he was right for the job and we are now on our third DB coach in 3 years (excluding Elliot)

Too bad for Chris Jones, hope his recovery goes well, was really looking forward to watching him this year. Unless he's a miraculous healer, I doubt he plays but for maybe the last game or two, and even that is dicey. The hits just keep coming.:(

Don't worry...there will be a ton of people that put an * on this season now, you won't have to do it.

If the season turns out better than the naysayers think, are they going to make excuses about the schedule being perceived as easier than '18 so they will put on an * ?

Let the season play out.

Marquel Dismuke 4. Importance of Donte' Williams' role as a developer of talent escalates: The first-year Husker cornerbacks coach is highly regarded for his recruiting prowess. He's killing it on the recruiting trail. But he faces a critical August as an on-field coach as he prepares not only Jackson to be a reliable defender, but also young corners in sophomore Eric Lee and redshirt freshman Dicaprio Bootle. Something else to consider: Might redshirt freshman Marquel Dismuke be a candidate to move from safety to corner? After all, former NU secondary coach Brian Stewart said in February of 2016 he liked Dismuke and Bootle as wide-side corners because of their quickness.

Troll all you want, but there's a difference in losing a projected starter, and losing the best player on your defense.
