people try to sing it their own way. It is our anthem. It has been our anthem and it shouldn't be 17'd with. For all of her faults, Whitney Houston sang it the best it's ever been sung. The Fray may as well have been Rosanne Barr in my opinion.
The Fray version was one of the worst that I have ever heard. It should be sung the traditional way, but even if it is not, it should not be completely butchered like they did.
I agree on Whitney Houston. Hell, even Kelly Clarkson did a great job at the Super Bowl.
I saw an article that had a funny quote from the comments in it, something along the lines of "That was so bad, that we have retroactively lost WWII." It was just completely awful, and a vast majority of people agree.

Back then that version was about as far from traditional as anything sung by today's artists. It was Whitney's version that ultimately made everyone want to take their own special spin on the anthem because she changed it and everyone liked it.
Playing the song for her. They played it the traditional way and her powerful voice is the only reason it was unique from what I remember. She didnt oooo oooo ooo it up or anything. Just sang it with all her heart.

The anthem shouldn't be off limits. I'd love to hear a Yonder Mountain type band draw up a bluegrass version, or Mofro to rock a bluesy anthem. Jimi Hendrix rocked an extremely soulful rendition at Woodstock without singing at all, and people still love it, showing the music can truly matter. I encourage all bands to experiment with their creativity to bring us something to entertain and connect with.
For some reason just before the Fray started, I was thinking about a friend whose son is in Afghanistan. We've been there over a decade--the longest war our country's ever been in. I was reminded that there are young men and women the same ages as the players on Kansas and Kentucky who were waking up in the mountains of Afghanistan. I had never heard of the Fray before but I thought the toned down version was appropriate. No need for manufactured triumphalism every time the anthem is sung.
Was my favorite rendition I've heard. Very very catchy. Probably doesn't hurt that I also love The Fray.
The one thing I generally hate about remix'd national anthems is all of the vocal gymnastics - this wasn't any of that. This was taking the original lyrics, sung very appropriately, just put to really good music.

That was a group of sandy vages with the standard-issue nasally whisper voice complete with patented warble. They took the Anthem and made it a choppy, winding mess. But that's what they do . . . blow their noses through microphones and call that "music." And that, LTblows, is why they suck. See how that works?
I just assumed the guitarist messed up a few times. I didn't mind the arrangement in theory, but I don't think they performed it very well. Unless that was intentional, in which case I didn't like the arrangement at all.
One of the guitar players hit a wrong note multiple times. It sounded like a just formed garage band. I had to mute it.
Whitney was by no means the first to give her own rendition. This may not have been the first either, but it's nearly 10 years before Whitney and still talked about today.

since he was the original "controversial" national anthem singer way back in 1968before the World Series. Some saw him as a disrespectful (sunglasses!)beatnik(long hair!) who dared to alter the tune of the British salute to drinking it's based on.<div>
