Does the name Aaron Rodgers come to mind? Cal stoll him from Humboldt State and the rest is history. ..

I could be biased, but I think his arm strength is comparable to anyone we have on the roster right now. As I mentioned earlier, he can sling it, downfield or otherwise.

You have to be biased to think his arm is anywhere near as strong as TAs or AJs.

I just seen this on the front page, does anyone know who this kid is and if we are actually considering him? If he can hit the short and medium passes better then Tommy and can pick the offense up quick enough, maybe Tommy could be a WR simular to Person El or Jammal Turner or Alonzo Moore type. I think he kill it as that type of WR.
I couldn't disagree more

I may be off, and I am sure some of you can find great exceptions (I thought of Cam Newton, but he attended junior college AFTER he spent two years at Florida), but I'm leary of a JUCO QB. QBs need to be bright. Most who play football for a junior college are there because they can't make the minimum test scores. That seems to be the opposite of the what the mental make up for a good QB should be.

This is college football. If your QB can't move it will catch up with you in the end. If we are a passing team, we won't win big over the long run.
Yes. Tell that to Bama, USC, Oklahoma, Michigan State.

They would like O'Brien to start game one next fall, not red shirt.....and he has a significant shot. He is considered the odds on favorite by some.

Really? Who is "they"? Throwing a freshman QB into the mix right away is not always the best. Saban wont play a true freshman QB. I cant believe any coach would say they have their starter before he even hits the campus.

Let's assume POB redshirts next year, Tommy's senior season. The coaches would be wise to not have their eggs in a freshman's basket. Not to say Bush or Darlington can't compete, but the fact that they are buried behind Fyfe tells me that they aren't secure.

Who is they? The coaching staff? This would surprise me as they put alot of value in experience and they have never seen PBO run our O against college athletes.

I don't think so, I think it's more of an indictment of all our other QB's, that aren't TA. I'm sure they would like to red shirt POB, but won't be able to if we can't find someone to surplant Fife as QB #2. We need better QB depth big time,

The Pelini recruiting machine strikes again!!!!

Fyfe

Bush

Darlington

^^^^^Reasons why the staff might consider a Juco QB

+1 ... I will add that TA needs to know there are consequences to ongoing terrible decision making.. he needs viable competition

You are off. There are several very good reasons for a kid to go JUCO versus taking either a lower tier college scholarship or walking on. I know several guys that chose to go JUCO just so they could play right away and maybe garner a better scholarship offer based on their performance than they were getting coming out of high school. In general, Junior Colleges are much less expensive to attend as well so if a kid has to pay his own way it may certainly be a better option than walking on. Oklahoma got a pretty darned good QB a few years ago that won them a national championship out of Snow JUCO. I watched him play in high school and knew of his situation and that was purely a decision based on wanting to showcase his talent against better competition to garner better offers than he was getting. There are some guys that aren't necessarily dumb as well that maybe are lacking some credits to get in to a D-1 program. Some (many) kids don't always apply themselves in high school and don't figure it out until too late that it will hurt them. Some kids attend high schools with less than stellar guidance counseling as well. Lots of reasons besides IQ that make kids choose JUCO schools.

Benning just said on 1620 that the kid tore his ACL and a partial tear of his MCL (think I got that right). So he won't be able to take part in spring ball even if he came here. Hope he is ready to go by July.

So this appears to be a depth/backup issue again, if he comes to Nebraska.

Does anyone really know what's up with Darlington? I swear reports in the spring were that he was quickly taking over the backup spot, he looked really good in the spring game, and now he's 4th string?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was something with his concussion history, but if it is, why is he even still playing at all? He's mentioned changing positions, so that makes me think that either he is totally cleared to play, OR the coaches just haven't told him how they really view his concussion history. Either way it sucks, he seemed like a quality QB.

Ok........................................because he was the only quarterback to ever go from Juco to FBS?
More so because he was so under the radar that Jeff Tedford didn't even know about him when he went up to Butte College to work out the tight end they were interested in.

I think he would be ok to add depth, but i wouldn't want to see them waste a scholly on him.. if the kid wants to walk on, great, but not keen on giving out schollys to local JC QB's with ACL/MCL issues.

Based on that, if we bring him in it's more with an eye on 2017.

Early summer we were adding up the number of quarterbacks on the roster and looking for the attrition--now we're considering adding a JuCo. Have to think that we wouldn't look at a JC addition if at least one of Bush and Darlington was looking like the future. Guessing they aren't developing as well as Langsdorf had hoped for his system.

I wonder if we'll see position changes for guys like Bush or if guys will prefer just to leave.

I will tip my hat to Tommy that he plays well enough to get the team into the position where his mental break downs cost us the game in the end ...

Everyone wants a perfect QB. Most teams would win a ton more games with a perfect QB. However, perfect QB's are hard to come by, I think most coaches would attest.

I think we'll start building some depth here eventually, with POB and hopefully Gebbia.

I thought Fyfe was a better QB in high school than Martin. I'd be very surprised if we offered him a scholarship. That would mean we have zero confidence that Darlington or Bush will amount to anything.

So you don't think Armstrong could play at any other d1 school? In your mind how many legitimate division 1 qbs are there?
He's 2nd in the big 10 in passing. And leads the league in all purpose yards. I'm not saying his Vince Young, but to say he's not a legitimate d1 qb is asinine. He is 22-13 as a starter or something like that. But you don't think he's a legit D1 qb. Not all american, not all conference but just a d1 qb?

The hyperbole that exist in some message board fans is so ridiculous. How do you expect anybody to respect your opinion if you throw statements like that out?

Anyone else have an opinion on whether he deserves an offer? I watched his Hudl film and it looks decent. He seems to have nice touch and an adequate arm. He also moves well in the pocket and can take off if needed. However, he has a longer delivery which always concerns me. My bigger concern is his accuracy. He's completed under 55% of his passes this year which is low considering the competition. As a point of reference, Johnny Stanton is completing 63% of his passes as a JUCO this year in a tough conference.

We don't have a legitimate D1 QB on our roster, anywhere. If this kid can play, go get him. If POB can't beat him out, fine, if he does, fine. We need a player, or preferably two, at that spot going forward.

So the guy that leads the B1G in yards isn't a legitimate D1 QB? Disagree here. Tommy makes his mistakes, but he is a legit D1 QB. In fact, if he for some reason found a way to clean them up we might be able to make a run with him next year. He's essentially had only a little bit of time working with an actual QB coach.

I hope they take as many QBs as will have them. Let the fact that walk-on Ryker Fyfe is the #2 QB sink in and ask yourself what would happen to the team if Tommy blew a knee in camp next year.

Bringing in a JUCO is not exactly a sign that Tommy is getting moved anywhere. He'll be a senior. How many years would this kid have? 2 or 3?

Everyone wants to love Ryker, but 100% agree. We saw what he is. The tough part for me right now is the dilemma of what traits we want our QB to have. Right now I love having "Good Tommy" for the shear fact that he keeps plays alive with his legs. Having a down O-line like we have, this is a critical piece, and I like his ability to escape. I know things can change as we continue to try and get top notch OL folks, but I'm not sure I want a semi-statue back there until that happens. During our transition, the QB is an interesting spot.
