it's really good for those that like to read or for those that don't. And I never knew why McCarthy resigned.

The book tells the reason?

Rumor has always been that it was ~ the same reason as Richard Williams. Is that incorrect?

Well, I doubt she was on the pom squad. You really should buy the book. It's got a lot of other good stuff in there too. And he didn't even pay me to say that. The NCAA tournament team in 1963 was probably the 4th best of his 4 SEC championship teams. If the 1959 or 1962 teams had been allowed to play, we might have really made some history. Even the 1963 team was competitive in its 1st round loss to the team that won the national championship.

The neat thing to me was realizing I knew one of the IHL board members that voted to back Colvard. He passed away some years ago, and his stance then was far from the only positive impact he had on the area. I knew his family connections to MSU, but I never knew he was on the IHL, let alone involved in something so profound as that vote.

What was really interesting to me was to see how much public opinion had changed from 1959 to 1963. In 1959 most Mississippians were against MSU playing in the NCAA tournament. Each year public opinion swung more and more towards playing and by 1963 even Governor Ross Barnett just said I hope they win it. The College Board vote wasn't even close in approving it. And the reason the team snuck out of the state was because of a court order from a Chancery Judge in Newton County who obviously didn't have jurisdiction (the order was later overturned). Also I learned a lot about MSU President Dean Colvard. He was the right man for the right time and was a real hero in my opinion. We should all be proud that our Student Union is named after him.

I was in school then and I have always felt the 1962 team was the best team in the 60's. The one player they had that they did not have in 63 was Jack Berkshire. He was the best defensive player in the SEC and he was the reason the 62 team was actually better than the 63 one. I really believe the 62 team could have won it all if they had gone to the tournament. Damn....that was some good basketball !!!

Was Dawggeezer one of Veazey's sources??? He was fresh out of college and young booster at the time. Wonder how tight he and McCarthy were?
