Agree - he was a great President for MSU
He did a lot of great things for MSU, probably the most sports worthy was bringing Jackie Sherrill aboard to help us realize that we are capable of winning in football. I'm proud to have his signature on my diploma.

That's fine. But him singlehandedly changing football forever for our University can't go unnoticed and appreciated. Without Jackie, we wouldnt even be close to what we are becoming now. Thank goodness we never experienced the Bobby Wallace Era at State as LT wanted to make happen.

is exactly right. And I know this to be fact from a lengthy conversation with Don. Perhaps Ben Hilbun had a bigger impact, perhaps, but Don was the best thing/person to happen at MSU.

I agree about Portera, but I'm not sure I share your desire for growth, if you're implying growth at any cost. I'm more interested in quality, not quantity.
Agreed. Mac and Sleepy couldn't carry Z's hood and gown. Those two set the University back 20 years. I was a huge supporter of Foglesong because I knew he could right the path. And before you architects come here and take shots at Doc, I will say "17 you, you bunch of interior design rejects."
No, and it's notable that Dr. Z was increasing both quality and quantity. Portera literally arrested the growth and then reversed it. I know what he had in mind, but while the goal was admirable, simply continuing the trend in place when Dr. Z stepped down would've been the proper course.
Yes, continuing the path would have been right because it was working. I'm glad Portera went back to Alabama.
Me too. I graduated under Dr. Z. He was also instrumental in starting fund raising for the University that has grown much larger since those days.
Crap. That truly sucks. I was a freshman at MSU his first year there & I was one of his students in one of the few classes he taught while president.

As a student, I drove him to some functions in Jackson,MS. He was
a person who never made me feel like the petty driver I actually was. Talked with me the whole way back from Jackson about his feelings on the Ayers case and other things MSU. To say that he helped me rethink the way I should look at the world, politics and education would be an understatement.
I've known few others who have shaped MSU to be the institution it is today to the extent he has.
Rest his soul. If you love MSU and arent fully aware of the effort and leadership he provided, you should know that this wonderful place wouldnt be nearly as great without him.

Typical architect. Couldn't hack engineering, so you choose to pick out colors instead. And as far as Doc goes, he flushed the Timpleton Turd. That's a bigger accomplishment than any limp-wristed, Birkenstock wearing architect could ever achieve.
What have I said that is incorrect? Dr Zacharais moved us into the 21st century, we digressed under Portera and Lee, and Fogelsong expediently righted the ship.
