and here are some tidbits:

The NEW era begins on Feb. 20th against North Florida or Northern Illinois.

Game that might be worth skipping work over- March 18th. UAB comes to Dudy-Noble.

Best road trip if you have unlimited resources- Hawaii.

Best road trip if you're me- Memphis.

First SEC series- March 13 against South Carolina

Other SEC series of note- April 17 against UK, May 1st against Bama, May 14th against LSU. We close the season with SEC series against Bama, at Ole Miss, and LSU. SBW has not been announced yet.

Also, of note: We have apparently split the USM series just like Ole Miss does. We play them early in the year in Hattiesburg and then they come to Starkville later in the year. Only one game in the Jackson area so far- of course it's the Governor's Cup on April 14th. There are a couple of road games that look like they have the potential to maybe be bought out and moved to Pearl- La-Monroe, South Alabama, and maybe UAB.

The schedule looks very different than in the past. We play very few teams consecutively- it seems like we've split up games against the same team more than in the past. There is no big name non-conference team that is coming to Dudy-Noble this year a la USC Trojans, Arizona, or Baylor. Our schedule does look a little bit easier than last years for those who wondered how we would schedule since Cohen supposedly had an "easy" non-conference schedule at UK, but it's basically the same but we replace Baylor with Hawaii and the Cadence Classic teams with Nicholls State.

Is, or is not, the alleged February 20 start a full week's head start over when we used to start?

Nobody can start earlier than Polk used to any more, because the NCAA basically moved the start date to the season to the date Polk had always used. And, for all my criticisms of him, he was right about not starting the season any earlier.

simply in the fact that its the 3rd Friday in Feb. whereas in 07 and 08 we started on the 4th Friday in Feb. May just be coincidence.

I heard the USM-MSU series eventually will be one in Pearl every year, plus alternating one game between the Jewel and Hattiesburg. We play Ole Miss like that now. We alternate one game per between H'burg and Oxford and we play one in Pearl every year.

Why have we played UM so early in the season the past few years? They should be a rivalry game, and should be played in late April at the earliest. Same with Bammer and LSU. I think MState played OM the first SEC weekend in 2008- the same weekend as the SEC basketball tournament. Ron Polk was pretty pissed about it....I wonder if someone in the SEC office did it just to jerk him around.

This is the new mandated start date by the NCAA. All schools start this date now.

At least the road trips are early in the season. We get Bammer and LSU at home 2 of the last 3 weekends. If State is improved and has a shot at the SEC west title, these two series could be off the hook.

Either way, it's better than having UM the first SEC weekend, when it was spring break and the SEC basketball tournament going on.
