Just When You Think You've Seen It All

At a game Friday night both teams were using the onside/pooch kickoff method during the course of the game. At some point during the game, Team A does the traditional onside kick and to my amazement the kick actually bounced behind A's 40 yard line. A player on Team B alertly scooped up the ball and made a nice gain before being tackled. I have witnessed punts that failed to pass the line of scrimmage but never a kickoff that went backwards.

I saw an attempted onside kick go backwards about three years ago. Straight-on kicker hit the front side (facing the returning team) part of the ball, sent it spinning on it's end and rolled backwards out of bounds.

Kinda hard to explain but will try. Right footed kicker doing a directional onside kick to the left side. Apparently he hit the ball on its right side that put extreme spin on the ball causing it to curve.

Had to bump this because in many, many years of watching HS football I had never seen a kickoff travel backwards (see the original post). Well, now I can say I've seen it happen TWICE in one season after a game I attended Saturday. Like the previously mentioned game, the onside kick spun off the side of the kicker's football and went behind K's 40 yard line out of bounds near the 30 after striking a K player.

Saw a play last year where the kicker completely missed the ball on the kickoff.
