Not as uncommon as you’d think in those days in some instances. Multi-purposes stadiums were all the rave until the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Had them in most major cities. Either college and NFL teams sharing stadiums, or NFL and MLB teams sharing stadiums, or all of the above.

Yeah, I’m not surprised by a college team in a big city playing in a multi purpose stadium. But in this case, the stadium is owned and operated by the university. It’s on their campus.

I;m assuming its the Hilton Garden Inn in Tupelo....they usually house a road SEC team opponent of both schools almost every weekend, and have for 5-6 years

Reading and listening to the quote, I honestly don’t think he meant it as a diss. It’s just factually inaccurate. A lot of teams stay in Columbus, but not because it’s the only hotel.

It was a bad answer, but it may have just been a weird way to get to his excuse for losing to Texas Tech last season.

Hell, our team stays at a hotel in Columbus. Or they used to prior to Lebby at least.

As of last season our team was staying at the Marriott courtyard at the Mill. Prior we stayed at the HGI for years.
Visiting teams have stayed in Tupelo, Columbus and some even down at the casino in Philly. The main thing is being able to have team meals and some sort of space.

Yeah, folks in and around Memphis were pretty resentful that after decades of lobbying for an NFL team, Nashville just woke up one day and was like “sure, the Oilers can move here”, pretty much guaranteeing that Memphis would never get a team. They refused to show up and support the team that passed over them for Nashville.

They did play in Memphis for a full year. Memphis didn't come to games because they knew it was Nashville's team. So when the Liberty Bowl was packed with 60,000 Steeler fans the last game of that year, Bud Adams decided to play the second year in Vanderbilt stadium.

Honest question, why do visiting teams stay in Columbus/Tupelo? Starkville has hotels that could accommodate, surely?

There are really only 2 hotels here that can accommodate the meeting space needs of a football team. Courtyard (where MSU team stays) and the Hilton Garden. HGI is where almost every visiting team in other sports stay, but for football they book up for game weekends about a year in advance so they would prefer the revenue on the expensive rooms with a 2 night minimum vs renting the hotel out for one night to a visiting team with a group rate
