Kenny Payne was told he had the job...then Strickland's father in law Bailey Howell and Larry Templeton got into his ear. Kenny was bringing with him a 50 million dollar Nike contract that would have made State a top 15 Nike school. Note that his father in law is in with Adidas...and when will we ever be rid of Templeton? Greg as AD was a God send. Strickland is a puss.

no 17ing way Stricklin would turn down 50 million dollars. If that's true he can pack his bags as soon as that gets found to be true. How could he justify turning down that type of money?

I heard Kenny Payne had a $2,400 deal with Bojangles. No chance we get country ham biscuits in the Hump now. Thanks LT.

As has been said 100's of times...Yes, I'm sure one of the people talking to Payne told him he "had the job", but that Nike stuff was nothing more than talk in an effort to get an under qualified candidate the job (yes, less qualified than Ray).

Even if it was true and I call B.S. by the way, what does posting about it now do? Ain't **** none of us can do but move on. Only thing this does is stir more crap. I think the water is dirty enough already so let this **** settle

Obviously this reads like so much ********, but if there's even a grain of truth to it, I can't imagine that we didn't extort a tidy sum from adidas to "go in a different direction."

This board is home to stupid crap posted day in and day out but this might take the cake. The only possible kernel of truth in your post is that I'm sure one of the idiots who was trying to play AD probably did tell Payne he had the job when he never had a chance.

This is BS. I laugh when I read some of this crap. I laughed when I read about Bryce Drew being hired and I laughed when I read Coach34's list of 3 candidates from his dumbass source.

I am not sold on Football doing so well yet.... Until Mullens can get a Big win against an SEC West team , you might want to back off those comments..

past or present, that you have enough respect for to actually type out their name without some stupid nickname or misspelling?

It amazes me that people actually believe this garbage. First off, I don't care if the ghost of John Wooden is our head coach, Nike is not pumping enough money into MSU to make them a Top 15 Nike school. That's ludicrous. Never mind the fact we can't even get an old football helmet logo out of them, Nike is not investing that kind of money in a school that resides in a state of less than 3 million people. Our market is small potatoes. Plus, that small market is also fragmented by Ole Miss supporters (a Nike school) and other major SEC programs that border us (Alabama and LSU, both Nike schools). There is little reason for Nike to make a huge investment in MSU.

Knowing Kenny Payne is buddies with WWW (shady character) and has Nike friends, I'm thinking he just used his high profile buddies to convince some of our boosters that along with Kenny Payne comes big Nike money and a pipeline to recruiting. Apparently, a few of them bit on that hook, line, and sinker. I don't blame Payne for going that route. How else can you convince an SEC program to hire you at a 7 figure salary when you currently sit 3 seats away from the HC on the bench?

Or, maybe Nike did throw out some numbers, but those numbers were actually very comparable to what Adidas does for us and some pissy boosters embellished the numbers because they didn't get what they wanted in the first place. Either way, these numbers aren't remotely believable.

Don't forget that Payne coached at Oregon from '04-'09. Supposedly him and Phil or some more of the higher up were drinking buddies, but even Paul over at 247 said that any deal was highly unlikely. Nothing was guaranteed.

Hack and 7 just love to act like they know everything. Hell Hack talks **** about Rosebowl because he lives in Baton Rougewhile he himself lives in 17ing Atlanta. Oh and his defense is that he doesn't get paid to cover the recruiting and Rosebowl does. If anything that makes Rosebowl smarter than him.

It was signed in 2008, I believe, when the economy was in the absolute *******, so we took what we could get simply to move away from Russell. OM's new Nike contract is much much better than ours at the moment, but I imagine we're up for renewal soon.

I have heard this story as well, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that this story is 100% ********. Believe it or not, Payne did not interview well and his recommendations were not great. The only thing any other coach said positively about Payne to the search firm was his recruiting connections. Again, that story is 100% grade A ********.

And you are right, the numbers were terrible -at least bench marked against Ole Miss. We should be in the same ball park as them, so if renegotiation is coming up soon, we should see a much better contract. Top 15 contract? Hell no.

negotiate a top 15 contract with Nike right now? Why would we need Kenny Payne for that. Thanks Kenny for letting us know that money is available. Sounds to me like Phil Knight is pimping his product and doesn't really give a **** about Kenny 17ing Payne. Just cut out the middleman this way.

and from the school who threw millions and millions down the drain by being stupid enough to not let John Grisham's son be a walk-on on the baseball team I would believe most anything.
