Kicking situation

I will admit that I was skeptical, dare I say less than confident, when Mullen sent Sobes out in Death Valley to try that first field goal. Immediately all of the recent woes went through my mind. Two missed PATs (Sobes and Graves), the missed FG against USM (Graves), even back to last year, when Sobes missed kicks against UM and Bama. How? How were we going to make a kick in Death Valley against LSU with 102,000 coonasses yelling and most of the southeast watching?

But then he banged one home. Then whaddaya know, another. Ok, so we CAN do this after all. Maybe Mullen has been telling the truth all year, that they do look great in practice. Maybe Sobiesk has found his swagger now, and this whole FG thing won't be a disaster waiting to happen.

Obviously that's the line of thinking I prefer, but somewhere gnawing at me is the past. How will I feel if we need a FG from Sobiesk on Saturday? Where is the little green line that denotes FG range going to be? Most importantly, can he deliver again?

It's hard to put this down in stone because so much depends on the flow of the game, how well our offense is working, how successful we are at slowing them down, etc, but in general, I'd be cool with any FG attempt from inside about the 25 yard line (42 yarder). If we're at or inside the 25 and it's 4th and 2 or less, I'd probably also be OK with going for it, again, depending on the situation. I'd also go for it if we are outside the 25 but inside about the 40, as long as the first down is within reason. Put it this way, if we punt from the 40 and Bell blasts it out the back of the end zone, I don't think that 20 yards we gained means much to the TAMU offense. Bout as well take a crack at the first down.

I guess the bottom line on the original point is I went from zero confidence in our kickers to a moderate amount. I would say that I would love to see him knock one through early on Saturday, but I am reminded of what Spurrier used to say, that you could have field goals all you wanted, he was going to be getting touchdowns. Field goals aren't going to beat A&M but if this one is tied late and we need Sobes to win it for us, I now at least have some faith it could happen.

From what I've been told, sobes is a beast, just couldn't get out of his own head when he stepped on the field.

Hopefully that death valley experience, his head is in the game.

Before we get too excited, let's remember that all he did was hit a couple of 20-30 yard FGs. I feel a little better about our kicking situation than I did before, but the fact we're all so excited that he made 2 kicks that should be automatic says a lot about how bad out kickers have been the last couple of years. I'm still going to be terrified if he has to make a 40-yard kick with time running out and us down by 1.

Oh I agree Pat. In my example I specified tied late. If we are behind late, I'm not sure what situations I would prefer kicking over going for it.

I don't doubt Sobiesk has the leg to make further kicks but if there is one thing a kicker needs is confidence. Hopefully those 2 FG's gave him some.

Don't you forget I am 2 for 2 in PAT's in my lifetime in a real live game.

Wish I could say that. My first extra point attempt went into the center's *** but our coach did put me back there only because the starting kicker who was injured was my brother. Genius. I too had always heard kicking skills run in the family regardless of practice.

At this point, about all they've proven to me is that we can actually make an occasional field goal, but the word "confident" is still nowhere near my thoughts. Sobiesk made two chip shots from inside the 20 which should be expected for any kicker that is anywhere near an SEC football program, and this is still the guy that not only missed an EP, but he also banked another one off a goalpost in the same game.

I was very happy for the kid when he was able to make a couple kicks in a crazy environment two weekends ago, but I'm going to have to see one or two go in from outside the 20 before I start gaining any sort of confidence in our kicking game.

I get it, but you have to start somewhere. I feel better after two short makes in Death Valley. Not great, but better. It's yet to be seen if that can translate to longer makes, but if nothing else, at least he's passed the psychological hurdle of making one. Would love to see him drill a 45 yarder going into halftime Saturday that puts up up 24-10.

Legit question - of course - I never played a NCAA sport. So if I wanted to go back to grad school - did my 5 year clock start the first day of my freshman year 17 years ago or do you have to play a sport for your 5 year clock to start.

No doubt, and in the mind of a kicker, watching one go through is really all that matters. It's not really about distance when it's someone's psyche that we're talking about. It was undoubtedly a step in the right direction even if it was a small one.

You mentioned last year's egg bowl miss. But you have to also mention the FG he made to tie the game in the 4th qtr. It wasn't a chip shot, and I really thought that FG had more pressure than the potential game winner, bc if he misses the game winner, we still go to overtime. But we HAD to have the first one to tie the game. A miss there and we very likely lose.
