What in the world!!!! 4 ejected and team walks off the field with 5min remains in the game....what went on in this game?
The game was called at the 5:41 mark. Referee asked if Charles City wanted to call the game and they said yes.
Sounds like a bunch of babies couldnt get their way so they quit. Having said that if it was done for safety purposes I can understand.
Charles City lists 25 on their roster so they are down to 21 barring successful appeals. I would suspect they will continue and bring up JV reinforcements.
They had 17 in uniform last night for their homecoming game. They do not have a jv so nowhere to go for reinforcements. Personally I could see one of the ejections getting appealed but with all of the other ejections I don’t know if they would even bother fighting it.
It was sad to watch with all of the positive happenings for the homecoming festivities. Helicopter flying in the game ball; good size crowd for both teams; good band performance etc. Too bad the negative will ultimately overshadow a good win by King William.

From a spectators view hard to tell but if I was to take a guess... the first one was justified as a player took off his helmet on the field in frustration and threw it. The second and third were odd to me it appeared to be for comments they were making but the one young man ejected in that incident had been warned as he had already thrown his helmet earlier while on the sideline. The last one was bogus. A very physical clean play in which a young man pancaked a kw player got up and walked away. I wouldn’t have even expected a flag let alone an ejection. I’d venture to say the officials were just getting overwhelmed at that point. After that play the game was called off.
There was a lot of instances of inappropriate language being used on and off the field that didn’t help the situations at all. At no point did I witness punches or anything of that sort just appeared to be frustration with gameplay and officiating.

I went back and read the rule. It may just be a 2 game, depending on what the ref actually called. Here it is from the VHSL handbook.
(14) Effective beginning with the 2013 Fall Season, a player or coach who is ejected
for fi ghting (including throwing punches as an instigator, in retaliation, or intentionally kicking
or stomping an opponent), biting, aggressive physical contact shall result in a three-game
suspension. For using/directing profanity toward a contest offi cial, a student/athlete shall
be ineligible for the teams’ next two contests. Student/athletes who leave the bench area
and become actively involved in an altercation will result in a two-game suspension. The
fi rst time a player is ejected for fi ghting, he/she must show proof of completion of the NFHS
online “Sportsmanship” Course. The player will be ineligible to participate in any contest
until the proof of completion is received. A subsequent ejection of any player from the same
team for any of the noted offenses listed above will result in the need to show proof of their
completion of the NFHS online “Teaching and Modeling Behavior Course.”

1- First kid was ejected for slamming his helmet. It was his second unsportsmanlike penalty of the game. Two unsportsmanlike in one game is an automatic ejection.
2- Second kid was similar to the one above.
3- Third kid gave the finger to the opposing bench. Very unclassy and he knows it.
4- Fourth kid shouldn't have been ejected. He was blocking and slammed the defender to the ground. An unnecessary roughness should have been called and not an unsportsmanlike.
Next, Charles City roster is 20, not 25.

Ok. So kid 1 and 2 are 1 game. Kid 3 is 2 games. As for the 4th, sounds like might be able to appeal. However, there is a new rule this year that you can not hit a player that cant see you coming unless you hit them with your arms outstrechted. No way to know if that what the official called, but I would assume since he was ejected, that is what he saw or thanks he saw, which he must have considered it to be targeting, h nce the ejection. Either wayit would seem this would fall under the "agressive physical contact" part of the rule I posted above which calls for a 3 game susp.
I was going by what was listed on Charles City's digital scout site and I now see one player is listed twice so they actually have 24 players on that list and maybe 4 are no longer with the team? They have no roster listed on their rschool site and there's nothing on maxpreps
Kid 4 didn't blindside a player. He grabbed a guy blocking, picked him and up and slammed him on his back. No warrant for suspension. An appeal is planned for him.
Kid 3 did not direct his finger at the officials. He directed it at the other team, thus it's a one-game suspension. He knows what he did was wrong.
Kid 1 and Kid 2 will have to sit one game.
I know what you're saying and apologize if I sounded smart, but I know how it is. Athletics are still a mess around there. Team started with 17 and got up to as many as 21. Now they are down to 20. Rschool isn't updated regularly and Maxpreps usually carries over from the previous year. Digital Scout has a few duplicated players.
So how many do you think will suit up next week? That is all I'm trying to figure out
Expecting 15 to suit up at Middlesex. After that, they get a week to heal since King & Queen unfortunately doesn't have a team anymore. They should have all 20 dressed for the first time since Week 1 when they travel to Mathews.
Dre, thanks for taking the time to make sure we all understand what really went on. It's bad enough when something like this takes place, but it often gets speculated on to the extreme, and then made worse.

King William played well last night and were hungrier than Charles City, let's not take credit where it's due. I think both sides can agree that the game got way out of hand early on. You could tell both schools were frustrated with King William coming in winless and Charles City losers of four straight.
Tough game to officiate. Just glad cooler heads prevailed and they stopped the game before something really bad happened.
I hadn't noticed that King and Queen doesn't have a football program anymore. Just not enough kids participating?
Did you see where I posted earlier this year that Hatteras had to cancel their season? Only had 8 kids show up for preseason practice the first week. It is kind of understandable. There is an ever-growing, permanant population down there, but the additions are mostly retirees. What was also sad was they have a brand new coach and his first season went up in smoke before it started.

I read about your post earlier. It is becoming similar to smaller communities to lose programs. King & Queen just didn't have enough bodies to field a team anymore. From my understanding they do have enough for a junior varsity team, but a varsity team will not be fielded for the remainder of the year.
Hatteras is similar to what Charles City is becoming; a retirement community. As an older population enters, younger families are moving away from the community. Charles City still doesn't have any type of true development nor business and it's attracting the older families.
How is this affecting the school? The same way it has for Hatteras. A perfect example is the girls' volleyball season. The program returned three years ago with promise, but after graduating 10 players from last year's team, it literally started with only four players. The coach said they kept looking for just girls' to put on the court and for a long time they had to postpone games instead of the program folding for the year. They were finally able to get nine, but there has maybe been one or two practices where all of them have been there.
Unfortunately this trend was started to be seen last year, as Charles City's softball team folded during the season. I'm afraid there may be a similar instance this year for not only girls' softball, but also co-ed soccer. That's a wait and see situation as far as spring sports, but at least two students who played those sports last year is going to play another spring sport because they want to win.
So there are issues on all sides that affect students. I could probably write a book being that I have coached and covered the community news wise for several years. It's far from over but all you can do is pray for the community, the parents, and the kids.

Is there any hope that maybe kids from one locality that has dissolved a certain sport can participate in another locality? I know we talked about this a few years ago when CC was on the verge of folding all athletics. Two things that jump out at me about pursuing an option like this are 1). simple logistics of getting players to and from practices and games and, 2) acceptance of one program bringing in kids from onother school.
Damnit, high school is supposed to be fun. It saddens me that situations like this take away from the high school experience.

While the situation hasn't happened yet, from a logical viewpoint is that if athletics dissolved in the school, a student who wishes to transfer to another school while living in their current locality (say a kid in CC wants to go to New Kent to play sports) would probably be allowed and granted a waiver to allow for participation. The current rule says if a kid living in one locality goes to school in a different locality and wants to participate in sports, they are ineligible for the first year. Only a family move to a locality constitutes eligibility for participation in the current year.
Why does there have to be negativity in this comment? Greene has coached Charles City for 14 out of the last 15 years.
If you have ever seen or played high school sports (no matter which one), kids get frustrated when they are losing. If a kid feels unjustified that something is not being called (such as a referee missing a call), the kid and the coach will sound off.
I guess I'm assuming or asking for too much with the justification and assumption that if a negative connotation occurs then it has to be the coach or the student-athletes.
