Knee at half

Why is it that so many teams take a knee near halftime with only a handful of time left? Why not at least run one between the tackles? Odds are that you get a few yards. However, you could also bust one for a touchdown. It's probably less likely that they recover a fumble and are able to score.

A knee is a small risk no reward type play. Run up the middle has about as much risk but you actually get the possibility of a reward. I can understand not throwing the ball because you don't want to give up an interception to an athlete in space, but scoop and scores are extremely rare.

I think there is a how to coach football handbook out there that says to do that because all coaches seem to do it. I guess they worry about the risk of turnover so much that they go ultra conservative. They'd rather go into the half with the same score than risk a fumble return for a touchdown or maybe cutdown on an injury chance. I'm an aggressive fan so I always want them to go for a score over settling for nothing.

Depends on the situation as to whether I'd even want them to risk it. I get the notion, but it has such a low percentage of being converted into points most believe it is just smarter to avoid a potential turnover, which has a higher probability of occurring.

If only a few seconds with the ball on your side of the field, why risk a turnover and maybe and easy score for your opponent. I guess you also risk injury to a key player that you may need in the 2nd half.
