Why is it that so many teams take a knee near halftime with only a handful of time left? Why not at least run one between the tackles? Odds are that you get a few yards. However, you could also bust one for a touchdown. It's probably less likely that they recover a fumble and are able to score.
A knee is a small risk no reward type play. Run up the middle has about as much risk but you actually get the possibility of a reward. I can understand not throwing the ball because you don't want to give up an interception to an athlete in space, but scoop and scores are extremely rare.
