Whether you are correct or not, the point remains that we are 7 weeks into the season, we've beaten the crap out of Troy and Alcorn state, barely beaten Bowling Green and Kentucky, should have beaten Auburn (could have beaten Oky State, but only scored 3 points) and got throttled by LSU in the second half... why now? Why is this being reported right now? Why can't our administration wait until the end of the season instead of trying to make some kind of statement now? I have zero faith we will be ready to play any of the remaining teams on our schedule and will be absolutely shocked if we beat any of them. Our coach has given us no reason to think otherwise.

Also, our recruiting at this points is complete crap and there's no real promise of it improving before February. Why are we going to extend a contract of our coach who is, at this point, doing everything he can to define mediocrity 8 weeks into the season?

exactly. if this is true, mullen is the least of our problems. that would mean we have a functional retard calling the shots in the athletic dept. that said, its probably true. stricklin is in way over his head.

He said Mullen was working on an extension ... didn't say Stricklin was also ....

Maybe they're reducing his salary to a base, with performance incentives, and lack of performance decentives (not a word, but you get the idea).

We are MSU. I guess the AD has decided Mullen is the best we can do and the program is to his satisfaction. I do hope we win a couple of more this year and make it to some bowl, but I would have waited until the end of the year to have this signed. What if we lose out and get blown out in 3 of the 4 remaining games? Who will be behind Mullen then?

I'm not one of those people who would go as far to say "I'll quit watching MSU games and supporting the dawgs"... but it would be really difficult for me to turn on the TV on thursdays* if this happens.

Stricklin works out an extension right now -- and we don't turn the corner very soon -- he's likely to be leaving with Mullen IMO. Just absolutely mind-numbing timing.

Did we not give him one last year? Because if we did, he wouldn't be eligible to sign another until late December. If we didn't extend him last year, what in the world would he have shown us in this recruiting and season performance that convinces us that we need to give it right now?

I know VZ is just reporting what Salter told him...but this just doesn't add up on so many levels...

I bet this has more to do with recruiting than anything else. Recruits see the product on the field and hear the dissatisfied rumbles. I would not be surprised if this was being used against us on the recruiting circuit. Just a lame attempt to help combat that. Carry on...

Working on one is not the same thing as agreeing to one.

This MUST be announced like this. Because so many of you geniuses are fanning the Hud flames and demanding that we fire the best coach we ever had, the athletic department has to show some type of commitment to Mullen, if for no other reasons than to prevent a lame duck situation with the team and to keep recruiting together.

If we had better fans, none of this stuff would be happening.

I hope that's it. Why extend it now with season's end so near? What if we lose out with several bad loses? Do you still want to extend it when you factor in all the bad losses we have had going back to the middle of last year? Doesn't make sense.

As long as the buyout doesn't change, why would we care?
We could still fire the guy if need be.
Mullen gets to use it as a positive in recruiting, and Stricklin gets to use a potential raise as a motivational tool during a lackluster season.

^^^This^^^ For those wanting the coach to be fired, the only thing you should be concerned about is the buy out clause; the term is otherwise meaningless. Its actually the smart move to extend the contract of an embattled coach, presuming that Mullen is embattled.

Admit it, you would be more surprised if we didn't extend his contract than extending it. I know I would. In football I don't agree with the norms of the NCAA anyway. The contracts and incentives seem to be out of whack. Stricklin will be doing what most other ADs would do in his situation instead of thinking outside the box and actually managing his highest paid employee.

The buyout doesn't matter. It's the figure Mullen would have to pay to get out of the contract. The number of years left on the contract is what we have to pay unless some sort of settlement is agreed to. Thats why we should care if it is extended because it adds to the cost if he is eventually fired.

The buyout works both ways. There's one buyout the school would have to pay to fire the coach, and there's another the coach would have to pay to leave. The coach only gets the full amount of the contract if there's not a buyout in the contract to fire him. There usually is.

I realize this. It's a business. They will get rid of Mullen if they feel like they need to and I am fine with that. My whole point is that all of the crap being spewed on these message boards are not productive. It puts Mullen and the administration in a more difficult place than they need to be. It causes them to have to release these "votes of confidence."

an extension would add a year (or years)

, to the buyout so unless the yearly amount is reduced, then the extension does in effect increase the buyout. depending on who thinks they have levereage (coach or admin) an extension could actaully be good for msu if in fact ya'll decide to part ways with mullen.

Not necessarily. It depends on the terms of the buyout clause. The one Nutt had worked that way, but other coaches have a buyout for a particular amount.

The one the Anyone Anywhere Anytime Golden Eagles had w/ Ellis Johnson was a payout of the entire contract term, that's why they are most likely stuck w/ whoever their latest winless coach is, they can't afford to fire him

No ****, kv is "reporting" this solely to get the very reaction so many in this thread are practically jizzing themselves over. Geez. Definitely. Not only do I not expect Stricklin to have the stones to fire him no matter what happens, I don’t even expect him to have the stones to say “Ya know what Dan, I’m not happy with how things are going right now, we’re going to wait on this extension thing for a bit."

yeah, i'm pretty sure AD's should use our contract with nutt as a standard "what not to do" instuctional item. if stricklin is smart this could be a way to ease the pain of a buyout should one come..of course mullen's agent probably isn't a dummy either. it comes down to who thinks they have leverage i guess.

I don't trust that Stricklin is smart about this aspect of his job at this point. But I do think he's smart enough to realize that Mullen has got very little leverage on us right now...

We're in the middle of what most of us see is likely to be a 6-12 run. Extension talk makes no sense unless it's a "vote of confidence" that isn't going to actually get done anytime soon -- in hopes of calming the masses. Which it's not accomplishing at all I don't believe...
