If you can limit another teams star player from averaging their usual lets say by 6 PPG and if this directly because of Butler.

That is the impact a defensive player can have it's not all about scoring.

Not a flashy get, but dang it will be nice to have some guys who can play defense after the defensive embarrassment that was 23-24. NBA teams carry defensive specialists, no reason why we shouldn't. Could very well be a team leader type guy too (no idea if that is in his DNA or not though).

LOL. A few dopes? I just don't agree that he should be a starter. I want as many shooters on the floor as possible. He's a GREAT bench player.
I wasn’t referring to you.. Or at least I didn’t think I was. Why, did you say something bad about him?

As for whether he should start, I guess we’ll see. But I wouldn’t be upset if he did. Any dude who started for teams as good as his SDSU teams have been …including one that reached the national championship game year before last …wouldn’t be the worst option for us.

This is our 2nd conference defensive player of the year. Williams and now Butler.

Maybe it won’t be a layup line for the opponent this coming season.

Count me in
Yeah we'll have high defensive potential next year with just those two guys in the rotation. Everybody has Pope pegged as an offensive guy, but if you look at previous seasons he never shot as many threes as they did this past year. I think he's willing to adapt his system for the personnel. We could definitely be a lower scoring, defense-first team next year. Not saying we will be, but I think we're unlikely to closely resemble his BYU team last year.

Agree completely.
People spent years on this board talking about modern offense, can the recruits shoot, railing on Sahvir Wheeler for not shooting the 3 well. Then we add this guy and suddenly people look the other way. No one is denying he's a great pick up. But it should be as a bench guy who can come in and lock-down the other team's best scorer. If he starts it limits our offense. Because you have one less position who can shoot the 3. If that makes me a miserable SOB, Sour puss, POS, Bastard, so be it. Just the way I see it.

Respectfully if I’ve learned nothing else in my time here, it’s that this Matt Jones guy is an absolute clown. I hope you all make note that he said there isn’t a better perimeter defender in America. That is a bold statement, and that’s where unrealistic expectations are born. It’s not fair to the coach or the kid, it’s just a weird take that isn’t even necessary. Kid is a solid player, but the hyperbole is unnecessary, some in our media do it too and it burns me up just as much.

Tell me how Williams,Great and Butler all start.Talk about bigs clogging the lane...
That I can agree with, I think pope would have to bring one of them off the bench. But they will focus on offense now, they have to. He has gotten his 2 defensive anchors

People aren't being consistent.

Some of y'all need to quit taking it personally when people don't pump sunshine 24/7. Not everything has to be the best signing or best decision ever made. People are allowed to question decisions and that doesn't mean they need to "touch grass". Acting like someone is unreasonable for questioning this guy as a starter makes YOU look unreasonable.

That said, we need bodies. I'm not mad at the signing. I'd pretty much resigned myself to the fate that we aren't going to be contenders next year. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

I like it. 2 defensive POY picked up. And they're both seniors, I think.

...we shot and made all sorts of 3's last year, and it was literally one of the worst seasons of my life. It was so bad our Coach fled to Arkansas. Because we couldn't play any defense. Just to put things in perspective.
We need a couple of DeAndre Liggins type lockdown defenders. Otherwise we aren't winning anything. All people on here care about is 3pt percentage. That didn't help us last year.

If we could make the final four with Liggins' decent 3pt shooting at the SG position, I think this dude will be fine. Not as a starter, but let him at the opponent's best player and shut that person down. Hell, Cal might still have a job here if he'd had a single lockdown perimeter defender last year. I'm gonna trust the staff, but this addition doesn't wow me like some other names would.

I look forward to the kid having every chance to make me eat crow.

They can be upset it’s a message board they are free to express themselves, I just don’t get being upset at adding a winner and a lockdown defender

San Diego State isn't exactly known for having guys spray it. Look at Keshad Johnson - career 25% over 4 years on low volume - shoots 38% on 2.5 attempts at Arizona this year. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Butler shoots noticeably better in the new system.

A good defender who has contributed to winning teams. We could do much worse

It’s a fair criticism, but it’s also going to be dependent on who the 2-4 are

All the screaming people here carrying on about Pope being hired, need to fire Mitch, and so on quickly changed their tune once they heard Pope speak. So, BBN take it with a grain of salt some of the experts here on what their opinion is on a recruit or not. If Lamont plays well those negative nellies here will do as quick an about face as what occurred with perhaps the best hire that we have truly lucked out on occurring.

Shooting=Scoring.

Anyone pay attention to how today's game in 2024 is played? If goal is winning games in the 60's we are doomed.

So you think our new coach wants to win in the 60s? Are you ok? First you acted like you had a connection to insider info, and now you’ve completely lost your mind. Maybe go outside and take a breath, have a beer or something before you turn into Jack Nickelson in The Shining.
