1. Although our Co-DC combo is still unproven, I will make a leap of faith and declare that we have the best coaching staff that we have hadsince the early 90's. I anticipate us creating several turnovers on defense and as an added bonus, we now have CB's and safety's that can convert the turnover into 6 points. As a result, I think that we will giveour offense a short field a couple of times per game. Banks, Broomfield, and Mitchell are all great athletes back there.
2. We have a handful of athletes on offense that are legitimate threats to take it the distance on any given play. I honestly don't remember us having so many options of the caliber that we have. Bumphis, Perkins, and Heavens are going to keep opposing DCs up at night worried $hitless. And we have a head coach that knows how to put them in position to excel. I am extremely impressed with Bumphis. Some of the moves he made last year just aren't common at allin the SEC with a true freshman. The td catch against OM last year is just an incredible display of atheticism. The dude is a special player.
3. Football games (especially in the SEC) are won and lost in the trenches. I think we are solid on both sides of the ball up front. If we can stop the run, I am confident that we can hang with pass-happy teams now that have amuch improved secondary. I just see us bringing more heat on the defensive side instead of sitting back on 3rd and long situations.
4. This has to be the most energetic coaching staff that I've ever seen at MSU. Players feed off from the energy and enthusiasm. What a huge change from the prior staff. Polar opposites.
5. My wool has grown artic zone thick. For those of you predictingour SEC record at 2-6, I just don't see it. We went 3-5 last yearin the league. This was in the first year of a new coach (and new offensive scheme) while being led by an undersized DII quality QB. We were one handoff to Dixon away from going 4-4 in league play despite horrible QB play.
Kudos to the students for snapping up tickets in such a quick fashion. Folks, one thing is for certain. We are going to be an exciting team to watch as long as Mullen stays. We are going to turn some heads this year.I can't wait.
