I drove thru downtown Laurel last August for the first time in 30 or so years, to see if I recognized anything from when I was a kid there.
Not much. I sent Sobaka an e-mail, telling him the place looked like it needed an undertaker.
Decades ago, it seemed that Laurel and Hattiesburg were on different trajectories.
I know newspapers are dinosaurs, but a town, even today, without a paper, ain't much of a town.
So, Jones County, does it even have a weekly?

There has been a lot of renovation going on in the past few years. There are a few nice restaurants to choose from now. Hasn't always been the case. Cafe Le Fluers is the best in my opinion. Their gumbo is fantastic. The Loft and Lee's Coffee and Tea are both very good. I'm more optimistic now about Laurel than I have beenin quite a while.

Laurel's one of my secondary home towns, after Collins.
I was born in the old Laurel General Hospital, the same room and doctor as my mother was.
Spent much time there as a kid, lots of family ties back then.
It was a nice, pleasant town with great communities. 60 years ago.

I hardly ever get a chance to eat in Laurel any more even though I was there just yesterday but the last time I did, it was at Cafe La Fleur.
"Old Laurel (Mississippi Memories)" They have posted hundreds if not thousands of old pictures on there, neat to look back at for when Laurel was booming. You may have to send a request to the mods for entry but they respond quickly if it interests you at all.
Kind of a hijack now, when I was about 10 or so the MSU coaches actually came to Laurel and did a 2 or 3 day "camp" or "clinic" I remember Ray Perkins, Tom Goode, Wesley Reed, Smyley Gebhart being there, not sure about the others. Contrast that to today, would never happen.

Only downside is they're only open for lunch weekdays and on Friday nights. The owners live in a loft above the restaurant and they just work when they want to. They tend to take a few days off around holidays too and just close the restaurant. Here's a link to their website. You should definitely give it a try.

down that way right now. It is amazing the leasing that is going on right now all over this country and that area and the Heidelberg area<div>were once hot spots. Love to see them comeback, my padners and I just leased some hunting land we own in the MS Delta for oil and gas.</div><div>I never thought I would see that day.</div>
He's been getting a check every month for the last 15-20 years for nothing more than the blind luck of owningsome property that turned out to have some oil underneath it. He'sgotten well over $100K in that time, probably over $200K. He sold the property a couple of years ago, but hemade surehe keptthe mineral rights.
...one big problem about drilling in Mississippi is that the dry hole rate was pretty high-- that coupled with the fact that it was cheaper to get oil from abroad is a big reason why the oil and gas industry made a huge huge decline beginning in the mid-1980s. Mississippi oilmen loved OPEC because higher gas pricesmeant that it was economically feasible to drill.
Of course, drilling's not the only thing that can be done. For example, Denbury's done a good job with their enhanced oil recovery program theyhave going on in placeslike Heidelberg.</p>

don't explicitly reserve them they will go to the seller I'm told. I couldn't believe we got as many mineral acres as we did when we bought the delta place a few<div>years ago. Pat, my wife's family has been getting that mailbox money off the Hiedelberg fields for decades now and Denberry is about to make it sweeter it appears.</div>
...company to drill a well. It was a dry well but let me tell you, they created a beautiful field where the rig used to be and before they drilled it was scattered pine, shrub and clay soil. Put a nice road in to so you could drive you car right up to your stand if you wanted to.
hey day of the Oilmens Invitational. There were cars there from states all over the Southeast and Southwest. Hookers from New Orleans were brought in and there were some great parties....
