We are running the Patriots offense except we don't have Brady, Gronk, Edelman and a pro O-line. Brady can get away with only throwing over the middle because Gronk is a matchup nightmare. Gronk alone can completely open up the middle of the field because he catches like a WR and blocks like an offensive tackle. Then Brady is constantly hitting his receivers in stride for YAC. Throw in that the pocket is constantly collapsing on Laviano, he is consistently throwing on the run or off his back foot, which he does not have the arm talent to pull off like Rodgers, Stafford, Wilson, and the whole thing is a disaster.
Reading a WR in one on one coverage on the outside is the easiest read for a QB. Reading the safeties and linebackers is the challenge. Laviano should be able to read man coverage of the outside. Problem is the pocket usually collapses and he runs outside the pocket and throws on the run. He needs to step up in the pocket and deliver a 30 yard pass high over the shoulder to Patton or Agudosi along the sideline. But he has an awkward 3/4 release that might get knocked down if he steps up in the pocket. I like Rettig's arm strength and over the top motion but if Rettig plays he will need to take hits as he steps up in the pocket and delivers the ball downfield. He is pretty light and I'd nervous he'd get injuried. But I think he needs the opportunity to show if he is a gamer or not. If he can step in the face of a pass rush, take a hit and deliver a 30 yard pass down the sideline.
