I mentioned wanting Holmes to move to FB to my friend a while ago. He's got the upper body strength to manhandle a defense.

This allows him to still have a significant role on special teams and it spreads the linebacker position a little thin for the Browns.

Dude can lay a lick so if his heart is into it, I think he's be a great FB. I think with today's offenses he's not quite fast enough to play LB. Had actually wondered if he could work as a rush DE.

I'm a little surprised by that. I though the plan was to slightly move away from the FB?

How big is Holmes? Is he big enough and athletic enough to make and impact as some kind of hybrid of the two positions?

Guess this means we'll be seeing plenty of the Browns next year. We'll only have about 6 LBs not counting new recruits. I wonder if a guy like Zach Jackson or Arrington moves to LB.

Holmes should be good at FB. Holmes & Brandon Hill are built a lot alike - similar to Marcus Green. About 6'1" - 6'2", 230-240 lbs.

Why not move Nickoe to OLB and put Quadry Antoine in the S position with Arrington?

Nickoe may be too small for that though.

mullen has wanted him on offense for a while now. and christian is the type of kid that will do whatever the coaches want in order to get on the field. i like the move for him.

only reason i find this somewhat surprising is because he actually started gettin some PT later in the year...he did cause one of the fumbles in the arkansas game. but if this gets him on the field more i am definitely happy for him.

I don't think you can use Arkansas as a good sample. This year we were thin everywhere behind the defensive line but our star players were riding the pine. We add 2 stud linebackers next year and retain everyone but Lawrence (R. Brown has more upside anyway)... I just don't see Holmes cracking the lineup ever there.

We told recruits we want TE's because apparently we don't plan on using FB's but I think that's complete BS. I think we told recruits we lose our FB's and probably fabricated some story about how we'll use more TE's, but with all the athletic TE's we have we need to be running a Stanford/spread hybrid offense with a big FB. In comes Holmes who has proven to be an athlete, a good sport, and is a big *** dude...

i agree completely...was just pointing out he did have success, albeit a small amount, late in the year. i am sure he is excited about the move and just like all good athletes still envisions himself as a "playmaker" from his HS days. even tho i dont know how many touches he would get it will without a doubt keep him extremely motivated.

I think we are still going to use FB's, but I doubt we will see very many offered scholarships. We can get a kid like Conner Goodspeed at Madison Central to walk on and be pretty solid there.

I also think that Dan wants more h-backs than true TE's. Guys that we can use at both TE or FB, and maybe use them in various different ways and use motion with them. Think Aaron Hernandez.

This - There isn't much difference between a fb and a blocking TE in Dan's offense.

The dude is physical. Need him to block for people, but I'd like to see him on defense somewhere, as well.

Is 6 linebackers not enough? I figure we are pretty well set with wells, mckinnly, skinner, bohanna + the browns. And not a senior amongst the bunch. If anything, I recall b brown supposedly being a legit offensive player so I figured he had a shot at being a FB if he so desired.

As I posted in the other thread, I talked to him and he said he thinks he'll be a receiving TE.

If he can run solid routes, get separation and has good hands then it is a good move. You can never have too many good possession receivers that can catch the ball in traffic, take a hard hit and hang on. I know it was a million years ago but this was pretty much the TE I was. I was never gonna beat anyone down the field but if we needed 5 -7 yards for a first down my QB knew I could deliver.

This seems to be the way the NFL is moving. One of my good friends played TE at a small school. He was bulky, not that tall, but athletic, and when his eligibility was up he had a few calls from NFL teams seeing if he wanted to come try to make their practice squad as a HB. That TE a couple years ago from LSU ended up doing the same thing for the Lions.

If we have a 6'/6'1" guy with great body strength who can wreck people and catch the ball... HB. Do FB and TE duties. No sense in limiting a guy who has both abilties to 3 plays a game, or limiting our playbook for that matter. It's a mismatch.

I like seeing the NFL teams go 2 TE, 2 WR sets where they can run the ball or throw without having to rely on 4 WRs to try and block and not give up either deep or intermediate patters. Not everyone has 6'4" 235 lbs WRs across the board to block from a spread set.
