Only other thing that stands out to me, <20 receptions seems like a crime considering how well he caught passes in the past.

And The General would disagree, but he's just not an everydown back. Against the LSUs and Alabamas of the world, LDP is not the back we should be using. He just cannot penetrate. Robinson can. Griffin and Milton probably can. But LDP cannot. Get that bro out on the flats and let him run in space. Darren Sproles that shizz.

I will respectfully disagree with you here and disrespectfully agree with the general. If it is 3rd and inches, I would lean toward a bigger back, but LDP is 5'10" and like +190lbs. It is not like he's a 5'8" 160lbs or something. He has really transformed his body in the last couple of years. I think a lot of people envision how well he caught passes out of the backfield in 2010 and want to lump him in with a bunch of backs he is really bigger/stronger than.

People just don't know his capabilities. They point to him having bad games vs UA, A&M, & UM as proof. In case these people didn't notice, every single player on our offense sucked those games. I just don't sgree w those that say he's not an everyday back. To me, that's crazy.

know for certain, obviously (nobody does), but I'd be willing to bet that in those three games we could have had Ricky Williams and it wouldn't have mattered.

I tried to understand this, I really did. I have determined that you are saying that we didn't really get much of a look at the underclassmen backs, so we don't really know what they are. I would agree. I am ecstatic about our RB depth especially those guys you named plus Shumpert. I will venture a guess to say that LDP got most of the snaps because well... he was our best bet in just about every down. Hence him being an "every down back".

You know, the guys that see him EVERY SINGLE DAY IN PRACTICE. If these guys that see him EVERY SINGLE DAY IN PRACTICE thought he wasn't good enough for this role, then they would not give it to him. At this point one either thinks our coaches are idiots or the people saying he cannot handle this role are wrong.

LDP is very difficult to judge because he does have big play ability but ultimately he is not what we need at running back. He should be our change of pace back and would do well in that role. The only game we looked competent in last year against solid competition was LSU and Perk didn't play that game. I went back and watched that game and Griffin consistently gained solid short gains when little was there because he hit the hole hard and his momentum carried him after contact. LDP likes to tip toe around until he sees a hole and dart through it and the problem is when nothing is there he is a lame duck and gets dropped for no gain or a loss on plays he should gain 2-3 yards to keep us on schedule. I think the coaches are blind to this and it will hurt us this year.

LDP is a tweener back. He's not a Sproles but he's not an Ingam or a Thomas either. He's a back you can have on the field in any kind of play. Would I have him on the field for every play? No, no I wouldn't. I'm not a coach though and I don't mind when he's the featured back all game long. He's easily our best skill player and it's not even close. You put the ball in your best player's hands.
On 3rd and 1 though you put LDP's in though. There is not a better situation to air it out than 3rd and 1. Defensive coordinators know that too, which is why you don't put 220lbs+ backs in on 3rd and 1... you put tweener backs in (ala Forte). 4th and 1? That's different.
I think the reason everyone has an opinion about LDP is MSU fans are fixated on bruiser backs. I don't see Mullen going back to the AD type. Even when Griffin was healthy he still passed on him for LDP.
I'd use him receiving more than they did last year and spread his game open a little. I felt like they kind of tunneled him in to more of a running back than a hybrid running back/receiver type.

LDP absolutely should be our #1 back. After the way he closed out the 2010 season with his performances in the egg bowl and gator bowl I had huge expectations. Why haven't we seen that type of performance since then? Has he changed? Has the play calling hurt his chances? Or were they just 2 fluke games that he happened to go off? Probably a combination. If we can get a few performances like those 2 out of him then anything is possible this season... And by "anything is possible" I mean 8 wins.
Wasn't he an injury away from going to Auburn? Just seems like the guy has taken advantage of every opportunity God has given him. It'll pay off next May.
Perkins has homerun ability. He's shown it to us many times and he might be our best pass catcher this year. He is a good rb but he is closer to elite than average when he gets the ball in space off the pass.

This is the individual game equivalent of the "if we beat Auburn, we go bowling" argument. Teams tend to start running more in games they are leading in, hence your RB will get more touchdowns. I bet if you look at WRs the results are more mixed.

for me all I have to do is look at the run game against LSU or Arky, and my answer to the power run game is Nick Griffin. No doubt he is the best bruiser between the tackles if his knee's are ok. you have a banger without the griffin north south style in J-Rob. Milton is a slasher that needs a FB, but he is good off tackle or on pitch plays, possibly counters.
Perk brings a lot to the table, and is a really exceptional screen back. He is a tough cover down the field for a LB even at 220. He could be a muscle hampster or MJD type, but I just do not see that mentality. Perk is good on counter plays as well. He needs a pretty good crease, but Griffin just doesn't need as much. I like J-robs style and I see him running with way more confidence and field vision this year. he is a tough ask to tackle one on one, and it's going to get worse for others if he stays healthy.
We can use all of them effectively. I would pound the shiz out of OSU early with griffin between the tackles early to establish if it was my choice. That is as long as his legs are ok. Give him a blow, and bring in one of the others. Establish that, then a little PA, then some screens. throw in a few deep balls on 2nd and short to stretch it.

Compare Perkins' YPC in our losses with the YPC of Griffin and Robinson in those same games and you'll see why many of us were pissed at the playcalling and personnel decisions in these games. It was maddening to see Robinson or Griffin rip off a 5-7 yard run and never see the field again while Perkins was routinely getting stopped for losses and minimal gains.
No. I think it was the coaching change at Auburn that did it. To my knowledge they didn't rescind his scholarship, but I feel pretty sure he didn't get hurt or anything in HS. He ran track and junk that spring.
If they did, it'd be because Chiz didn't think he was good enough. But I don't think that happened. Plus, our school has a lot of State fans, and I'm sure his friends were pushing him towards us.
EDIT: I went back and checked to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. He committed to Tubby. When he left, he was really iffy on Chizik like most were. He really liked Dan Mullen, and Melvin Smith has a sister that lives in Greenville, so he has ties to the community and that probably helped with his parents. They're good people and they wanted their son to be in a good place where the coaches were going to take care of him. I think it helped with Melvin Smith having some connections.
And like I said- pro-MSU school. Small school, kids are all pretty close. Hard not to listen to your friends and want to be around them. I think that won out in the end, too.

I remember he probably didn't have more than a few receptions all year in 2010, then the Egg Bowl is played. I think we quadrupled the passing plays on the season up to that point in that one game. He had like 4 catches for 150 yards nearly and 2 TDs, I think. I swear that was the first time all season I saw us throwing the ball to him. Game freaking twelve.
