Head coach Jeff Lebby discusses Saturday's second scrimmage of training camp
Mississippi State concluded its second scrimmage of training camp on Saturday morning at Davis Wade Stadium.
This is exactly correct. There was a time years ago where you might get some insight from coaches or players in interviews, but those times are gone. Every interview is just formula script of saying the exact same things in different ways. None of it has any substance. I feel like things would get better if they just stopped doing interviews for like 5 years and reset.I really did not gain much insight from any of his comments. Negatively or positively. Obviously they have lots to improve on. I'm sure Kirby and Sark say the same thing.
I've said it before but if we learn anything from the USM game it will be very bad news. We could win that game 38-6 and still finish 3-9. I'll hold judgment until the Arizona St. game.I will be my own judge where they are during and after the USM game.
I just shake my head when I read posts that are focusing on the criticality of AZ State, as if Southern's a given.I will be my own judge where they are during and after the USM game.
It better be a given. I think a lot of our fans are still suffering from PTSD from some of those USM games in the 1980s. They're a below average G5 team at best.I just shake my head when I read posts that are focusing on the criticality of AZ State, as if Southern's a given.

I wasn't necessary thinking wins or loses. I was thinking how they play.It better be a given. I think a lot of our fans are still suffering from PTSD from some of those USM games in the 1980s. They're a below average G5 team at best.
It's a given until it's not. In that case, we riot.I just shake my head when I read posts that are focusing on the criticality of AZ State, as if Southern's a given.
Bingo. We won our first game easily last year, but it was very obvious there were serious areas of concern.I wasn't necessary thinking wins or loses. I was thinking how they play.
It’s not as if losing to USM is out of the realm of possibility. But if that happens, nothing else this year matters. The Lebby train is off the tracks.I just shake my head when I read posts that are focusing on the criticality of AZ State, as if Southern's a given.
The Marshall football team basically transferred to Southern with Huff, and won their conference last year. They have institutional experience playing together.I do believe USM has 11 transfer WRs and one of them was a Bulldog last year. They are truly starting from scratch. If we don't win, fire the whole staff before the bus gets back to Starkville.
What is this "given" you speak of ?I just shake my head when I read posts that are focusing on the criticality of AZ State, as if Southern's a given.
Jokes aside, it's factually a very dangerous game. I posted a few weeks ago our G5 road game results and they ain't pretty. Even when we're good.I just shake my head when I read posts that are focusing on the criticality of AZ State, as if Southern's a given.

I'll say this again. They went from 3-9 (3 very close wins vs. crap teams) and losing to us 49-0 in 2014, to playing way too close to us in Hattiesburg in 2015. With Dak as our QB. Without the transfer portal. The “they brought everybody from Marshall” narrative has been exaggerated a little bit. It’s the QB (a good one, granted) and about four other starters, which I want to say are mostly WR’s and DB’s. A lot of the Marshall transfers were reserves at Marshall last year, as I understand it. They’ve still got major LOS questions.
To go from 1-11 in the Sun Belt to immediately beating an SEC team would be a major major leap, even if they’d only be beating us. I suspect they will be better but I don’t think this is a ready made conference title contender right off the bat. They were picked to finish 5th out of 7 in the Sun Belt West.

Yeah, and it's not like I think that Lebby is making all of this up. However, I know that if I was a returning head coach of a 2-10 team, and the biggest gripe that fans have against me is that I brought back the coordinator of one of the country's worst defenses, I'd be doing my damnedest to highlight some good things about them too.I've said it before but if we learn anything from the USM game it will be very bad news. Fair enough. If we win this game similarly to that game, I'll be thrilled. My motto with road G5 games are to just get out alive. I do like that it's the opener, so we should at least be fired up to play football. We haven’t earned trust yet so I don’t blame anyone for being concerned. I just am less sold on USM than others.
The other thing about the 2015 game, yes it was closer than it likely should’ve been… but we still won it by just under 3 TD’s. And we had a double digit lead from early 3rd quarter on. We probably win that game something like 41-13 if Shumphert doesn’t fumble going into the the end zone and Ross doesn’t muff a punt deep in our territory, both within the first 10 minutes of the game.
We aren’t as good as we were in 2015 but they likely aren’t either. We had Dak but they had one of their best QB’s in program history too, who has also hung around the NFL for a decade. And their HC from that year is now one of the most respected OC’s in the NFL.
Their best win last year was Louisiana. The two P4 teams they played kicked the shlit out them, and one of those teams sucked. The Marshall football team basically transferred to Southern with Huff, and won their conference last year. They have institutional experience playing together.
Who on here is talking about being improved? I think you’re just gaslighting. Everything I’ve read has been doom and gloom the entire offseasonTheir best win last year was Louisiana. The two P4 teams they played kicked the shlit out them, and one of those teams sucked.
Marshall was good for their conference. That doesn't mean they were good. Southern's not magically going to be good.
If we can't beat Southern by more than two TDs, we've got some serious, serious problems, and all this talk about being improved will have been horseshlt.
Yeah, I remember being a bit concerned about the way they were running on us. Then Skaterbro trucked us and the secret was out.Bingo. We won our first game easily last year, but it was very obvious there were serious areas of concern.
This is what has me filled with dread. I am NOT encouraged by our defense outplaying the offense. This tells me that this season could be even worse than last year's.So, our offense was mediocre and our defense looked good against our mediocre offense.
Let’s get excited, boys…!![]()
I don't think they're world beaters by any means; I don't think anyone does. But we're not good. The “they brought everybody from Marshall” narrative has been exaggerated a little bit.
