anyone that disagrees with that doesn't know the programAnderson, Shea, and Graber would disagree with that.
2 is the average, not 4 fyiHe is going to be extended no matter what happens the rest of the season. That is how this stuff works, coaches need at least four years remaining to avoid negative recruiting. Hobbs has two options : 1. Announce it now after clinching a bowl berth. 2. Do it after the season when it's possible the team has lost four straight. Either way it is happening.
The first part of being good is to beat teams apparently equal to us, and those worse than usAll of this talk about a contract extension for Greg is way premature. No one would argue with the fact that the team is far better than it has been over the past several years. No one would argue with the fact that the coaching staff is far improved over any staff we have had over the past several years. That being said:
1. We have not beaten any team with a winning record;
2. The teams we have beaten have a record of 2 wins and 11 losses against Power 5 teams;
3. We have yet to play a team with a winning record, and the remaining 4 teams on our schedule
all have winning records.
Let’s wait until the season is over before jumping on the contract extension bandwagon!
the first part to be good is to be consistent; something we are notThe first part of being good is to beat teams apparently equal to us, and those worse than us
In the past, we would have lost a couple games that we won this year
The next step is to beat a team that we are underdogs
It may happen this year
As to an increase in pay, that is subject to debate, but he will get it, more than likely
You are probably right.Well, debate and criticize all you want, but it's happening.
What’s that old saying? “You don’t know what you had until it’s gone. “ It happened once before and though I don’t expect Greg will be receiving a “ new “ contract this soon he has proven his value thus far once again. We should realize now we have and always will have Schiano detractors. If we went 7-5 , 8-4 or even 10-2 over the next 4 years people would say he is overpaid. Time to just let the powers who pull the purse strings decide contracts.Gotta love selective memory. You think coaching salaries are expensive? What about the incompetence we experienced from 2015 till 2019? That was more expensive than anything else, especially considering the revenue which was lost during those years.
Schiano isn’t ever getting fired and is the best football coach Rutgers is capable of getting. He’s coached here 15 years and has proven time and time again to be up to the task, and has a strong track record of achievement.
This is his greatest coaching job yet, and he’s built a competitive, disciplined team in the most difficult conference in America. Despite lacking the resources of better programs, most notably a Fieldhouse and NIL. He’s built the program from nothing to something, despite the naysayers making it more difficult to recruit.
He knows the secret recipe needed to be successful here, and has employed the correct strategies to realize it. Losing Schiano would be more crippling than anything else, and this is proven by experience, where we went from a full stadium to an empty stadium, in a matter of years. We don’t have that many donors to worry about donor fatigue, let alone worrying about the prospect of a donor paying for a buyout, because it isn’t ever going to happen.

anyone that disagrees with that doesn't know the program
also, I knew Graber and spoke to him several times and he's not only agree, he said as much to the press if you were paying attention.
Greg, to his credit, was able to demand things that made the pillars of a program strong. Bob understood the asks and got it done. Most people don't even realize that until 2000, there were only 2 tutors for all of RU athletics and 1 of those was a handler to get a certain player to and from classes for 3yrs!
you misunderstand, it's not about coaching or the players as much as it is the holistic approach of the program to winning and being competent. there is so much more to having a winning program than the coach and players. Greg understands this, Bob understood it.Graber was a good head coach. Shea could coach but he couldn't recruit; his west coast demeanor just didn't work here in NJ. Anderson was a decent coach, but I've heard from a couple of players that he was lacking in his ability to motivate.
I've said that until I'm blue in the face, yet people still conveniently forget that. Graber recruited some good players, yet he couldn't keep them in school.
Why didn't you just say he has to win a national title.Greg needs to beat Michigan, PSU, or OSU before we talk extensions this early.
you've a loser mentality with that responseWhy didn't you just say he has to win a national title.
we've only had him, Flood and Ash since making a concerted effort to actually compete in football. Ash was a huge mistake, many of us said so but 1 bad hire doesn't make a case. Flood won the BE title and almost beat a legit VaTech team in the Gator Bowl. If RU didn't try to do things on the cheap, results might be different.
I am often a half glass empty guy, waiting for the bottom to drop out, as often happens as a RU fanthe first part to be good is to be consistent; something we are not
I would agree with your post if you’re saying that a contract extension this season is a bit premature. The “Greg Haters”(not necessarily saying you’re one of them), will always say that we still may go 6-6 this season so did he really earn an extension, which I would say you have to look at the big picture. He has, again rebuilt the “infrastructure”, which was broken. That is just as important. I do think we will win another game, but I’m fine to wait until next season to talk extending him.All of this talk about a contract extension for Greg is way premature. No ONE seriously thought he was going 6-6 this year anyway. I know there are a few but let's put those in perspectiveI would agree with your post if you’re saying that a contract extension this season is a bit premature. This doesn't mean we are ignoring the man- Hobbs needs to be staying close with Greg to make sure everything that was promised in this contract is getting done as well as some additional things.
No ONE seriously thought he was going 6-6 this year anyway. I know there are a few but let's put those in perspective
1- you have the wonderful rutgersal types that are just eternal optimists.
2- you have those that said 6 wins because they really don't like Greg and that was their expectation for him as they really didn't think he could do it because he sucks.
Greg has done something this year- he has beaten the teams that are either- not as good as or maybe equal. Funny this is- I see some saying- but who did he beat? We are better then those teams. Slow down and think about that statement for a second.
Who built the team that is now better then
NWU- how has finished ranked 4 times since 2015
Temple- finished ranked 2 times since 2015 and many on this board claimed were passing us by
VaTech - Not much to add there - if we have now passed them by, that is impressive
MSU - 11-2 Peach Bowl win just 2 years ago
Indiana - Outback and Gator bowls- finished 11 just a couple of years ago.
And now we and many talk of being near or possibly better than Iowa
Anyone that is trying to knock 6 wins because we should win those games is not paying attention. In itself- that is huge for the program.
agree and as I also point out- the fact that we are supposedly expected to beat NWU/VaTech/MSU/IndianaAnother thing - the whole not beating a team with a winning record is being blown overboard. Michigan State and Indiana have not yet lost to anyone with more than 2 losses (all their losses are also to major conference teams). They’ve played a tough schedule. NW lost to 4-3 Nebraska and everyone also meets this criteria too. VTech took losses early losses at Marshall and to Purdue but beat Pitt and Wake (only ACC loss to FSU). There are a lot of highly ranked opponents baked into these W / L records. I’m not saying we played world beaters, but it’s also not true that these teams played a BC caliber schedule and lost.
Plum knows !!Yeah but see Plum’s post. Past 40 years. It’s him or dog$hit… it’s not simply his job when have been unsuccessful plugging anyone else in.
I think after the season heading into the bowl is a great time.He is going to be extended no matter what happens the rest of the season. Stop it with the nonsense! from where we have come from give Greg the contract extension now and be done with it. showing the love now pays dividends now and in the future. All of this talk about a contract extension for Greg is way premature. Have we beaten a team that would have had a winning record had we not beat them? And we lost to both teams. I'm sure he meant to say we have not beaten a team with a winning record.

Was that Graber’s fault? No , it was Rutgers University’s issue for many years. There was hardly anything set up to make sure players were doing the necessary school work, tutoring was limited therefore Graber was put into an unwinnable situation. All that academic and recruiting infrastructure was built during Gregs first stint as RU's head coach. Now he is keeping the administration accountable in regards to facilities all the while maintaining academic achievement and recruting at a high level. Was that Graber’s fault? The D was for defense, not depth. And that always bugged me.. Graber came in as a defensive side coach... but it was the offense that went nuts and did well.. yet our D gave up huge chunk yards and TDs over and over.We had some talent then but depth after first team -second team was lacking.” Hey Doug where’s the D ? “
Hey he was decent golf coach .Completely agree. This all falls in Freddie G's lap: he wanted athletics to go big time on a shoe string budget.
Schiano has always insisted upon high academic progress by his players. That is often forgotten by our crowd of “ he sucks “ boys and gals. Funny how few who claim Rutgers legacy fail to promote that. Greg’s history at Rutgers says he has changed the visual. Yes we can do both…All that academic and recruiting infrastructure was built during Gregs first stint as RU's head coach. That is sort of a yes and no.He did a great job here first time around. He could have been better in years 2007-2011 , but he did the job that eventually got us the BIG invite .
He’s doing another solid job . Not sure if it’s going to be great, but we are better off than any other point since he left.
People forget who we are . Rutgers has been the dregs of the league since joining. We are the fat , ugly kid at the dance. Be happy with what we got in schiano.
He’s not a professor. He’s a football coach .Schiano has always insisted upon high academic progress by his players. That is often forgotten by our crowd of “ he sucks “ boys and gals. His message to us in our living room was that he was going to take the young man we developed and continue what we started. He made it clear that he couldn't watch him 24/7 but he knew that we already took care of teaching him responsibilities. But, he would continue to stress what is right and wrong and hopefully even bring him to the next level by learning charity, giving, responsibilities as an adult on his own. He’s not a professor. He’s a football coach .
Keep kids eligible and win games. Schiano understands that
