Warning, this could get long.
My son and I have attended now 8 of the last 11 white outs. Before making the white outs, we attended as many games as possible. Luckily would attend random games 2-3 times a year and stay with our friend who was on staff.
He’s 25 and works in academic advising at Grand Valley SU outside of Grand Rapids.
He arrives home Friday night and we go to Cleveland where my wife is attending her class reunion. We sleep there and drive 3.5 hours to The Happiest of Valleys. Tradition says CC Peppers for a sandwich, then downtown to walk and purchase clothing.
Met and talked with a handful of Oregon fans and all saying they had been treated very well, with the occasional college age rhetoric being spewed.
To the tailgating. Hang with friends then to another tailgate near BJC. Another friend from NW Ohio is there and his son works for PS Football. All a good time.
Then the outlier Duck fan starts chirping Sandusky. My son turns on a dime and gets about a foot away from the 50-year old and proceeds to rip him a new one. Question why a grown man would make jokes about it and told him what kind of a person he thought the gentleman was. Honestly, it was kind of a proud father moment.
We get in line and the guy’s wife comes up and apologized to us along with her husband.
The game. Loudest we have heard it. Enjoyed our seats. Good people around us for good conversation. Not happy with first 50 minutes, but confession time. With the lead in OT, this old man thought we had it and got to close to onions.
Then the finish. We always sit until stadium is empty and leave. Same Saturday. Walked back to vehicle, stopped at Sheets for road snacks and headed back home.
Yes, we stopped to sleep. Arrived back in Archbold, Ohio at 8:00 and missed serving communion at Church.
As disappointing as the outcome was, I spent a tremendous day with my son at a Penn State white out, and you can’t beat that.
