Warning, this could get long.

My son and I have attended now 8 of the last 11 white outs. Before making the white outs, we attended as many games as possible. Luckily would attend random games 2-3 times a year and stay with our friend who was on staff.
He’s 25 and works in academic advising at Grand Valley SU outside of Grand Rapids.
He arrives home Friday night and we go to Cleveland where my wife is attending her class reunion. We sleep there and drive 3.5 hours to The Happiest of Valleys. Tradition says CC Peppers for a sandwich, then downtown to walk and purchase clothing.
Met and talked with a handful of Oregon fans and all saying they had been treated very well, with the occasional college age rhetoric being spewed.
To the tailgating. Hang with friends then to another tailgate near BJC. Another friend from NW Ohio is there and his son works for PS Football. All a good time.
Then the outlier Duck fan starts chirping Sandusky. My son turns on a dime and gets about a foot away from the 50-year old and proceeds to rip him a new one. Question why a grown man would make jokes about it and told him what kind of a person he thought the gentleman was. Honestly, it was kind of a proud father moment.
We get in line and the guy’s wife comes up and apologized to us along with her husband.

The game. Loudest we have heard it. Enjoyed our seats. Good people around us for good conversation. Not happy with first 50 minutes, but confession time. With the lead in OT, this old man thought we had it and got to close to onions.
Then the finish. We always sit until stadium is empty and leave. Same Saturday. Walked back to vehicle, stopped at Sheets for road snacks and headed back home.
Yes, we stopped to sleep. Arrived back in Archbold, Ohio at 8:00 and missed serving communion at Church.
As disappointing as the outcome was, I spent a tremendous day with my son at a Penn State white out, and you can’t beat that.

WE ARE….

Good for you. Sometimes it isn’t about the football. Those are the moments your son will talk about to his kids. Keep staying positive. There isn’t enough of that in this world.

My 2 sons have had this past weekend on calendar for months. Older son made sure to come home Friday, get ready and then watched UVA win Friday night. Great tailgate Saturday. I won this weekend long before kickoff. 3 of us making trip to IOWA this year as well. My sons want to spend this time with Dad. Winner!!!!!

Keeping the tone of the OP, one of my kids (a PSU alum) had to miss the White Out to attend a wedding. (It gets worse. At least one, if not both people, getting married were PSU alums. What PSU alum schedules their wedding on a Saturday in the fall?)

So dear old dad (and mom) were the babysitters. So I got to watch the pre-game show, and a few minutes of the game, with my grandchild, who had spent the day clothed in PSU attire. It was the first time I'd ever watched a PSU game with my grandchild. I'm not sure if they'll remember the occasion, but I certainly will.

I have attended a game almost every year since I graduated in 95. It was a lot easier when I still lived in PA, harder once I moved to NC 28 years ago. Much like the original poster, I have a routine. We (some combination of my wife, me, my son, my daughter) leave Thursday after work and drive half way. We get into State College Friday a little before noon. We shop all day and meet up with two of my friends from PSU (one has worked at PSU for 30 years, another is a teacher outside of State College). We don't hit the bars as hard as we used to and usually end up at Champs Friday night. One of the things that I learned from the sanction years is that I don't go up for the game. I go up to see my friends and relive some great memories and share the experience with my family.

I usually get to a few games every year. We went to the Villanova game a few weeks ago. Coworkers chuckled when I said I was going, but we had a multifamily tailgate going all day with friends from multiple families stopping by. It wasn’t about the game. It was about the people.
When my son was a freshman a few years ago, I went up last minute to an Indiana game just to meet up with him. The game was a snoozer, but I spent the day with him and we went out to dinner before I left for the weekend and he returned to his dorm. Again, I had a blast and it wasn’t really about the game.

Be very careful in Iowa City. Those people aren’t nice.

Hungover from Friday night, they congregate and start drinking at 6:00 am. They then don their black and yellow overalls before going into the stadium and doing their ceremonial 1st quarter wave.

They then start to physically threaten anyone wearing opposing gear, even females.

Trust me…Iowa City is a cesspool worse than Columbus.

Will that grandchild remember grandpa swearing at the poor offense? 😳😂😂and you missed some great steak sandwiches. Our guests from Chicago enjoyed them. Two very nice men.

I feel you. I had a cousin and his wife(both PSU alums) schedule both of their daughters weddings on home game weekend. One the alabama game a few years ago. The other was Michigan. I didn't go to the Alabama wedding and I'm still in the doghouse.

I’ve probably been to 6 games in Iowa City. The last time was the Juwan Johnson walk off. For the most part, folks have been nice. There’s always the drunk and stupid male student, but that’s almost everywhere. Perhaps it has changed. If so, that’s a shame.

Why Ohio? Just move to PA and save yourself the drive and humiliation of having to say you live in Ohio :)

I'm glad your son got in the face of that guy over Sandusky. Did that a few times in restaurants where SEC were making JS-PSU jokes. Doesn't seem to happen anymore though

As we get up in years - there is nothing better than to enjoy 'family time'. What is remarkable to remember is the 17-10 victory over Ohio State as a tremendous white out. We travelled from FL, our oldest is PSU living in VA, our youngest is FIU living in FL - and we gathered for shopping downtown, pics at the Lion, dinner and ice cream, tailgate wherever and just being together.
Some memories can be fleeting, and others are just wonderful for a long time.
Take care everyone and enjoy those special people and times together.

This game was the last we attended as a family. Wonderful memories on a damp night. This was the loudest continuous level sound we ever heard in the stadium. Literally all game long until a crescendo as the OSU QB was sacked and fumbled in the last seconds sealing the win.
