my first expectation was to sell rodney hood on a different direction for MSU and none of the buryball/lockerroom issues from the past few years would be an issue going forward. hood is a MS kid from a MSU family. he is priority #1, #2, and #3 going into the offseason. and guess what? ray flunked it. i don't care if hood talked of transferring months ago or had second thoughts about signing with msu a year ago, you sell him on your vision. ray didn't do that and now hoos would rather sit out a year instead of getting closer to the NBA.

expectation #2 would have been to hold onto all of our signees. our best signees (gray, ware) are both rumored to be looking elsewhere. if we lose both of them, this is an unequivocal disaster.

i don't know what my expectations of Ws and Ls would be next season, but i know right now, ray is not meeting my expectations. i know it's a tough spot, but dammit man, this is your job. a charismatic coach would walk in a room with those guys and walk out with all those guys ready to hit the practice floor. instead they are looking elsewhere. this does not bode well for making an impact on the 2012-2013 recruiting trail imo.

He should make it to the dance in year 3 if he's a recruiter, year four if OK recruiter good x and o. If he's not the latter, time to find somone new.

NIT in three years? I've never understood why being one of the 64 best teams in the country is so hard. I would certainly hope we're one of the 96 best teams in the country in 2 years. I realize that next year we literally have no players, but it's not like we play a hard OOC schedule, or that we play in league with a bunch of good teams. If he's a good coach he will have us in the tourney in three years. If he's not, I don't want him.
I don't think I've ever agreed with you on anything you have ever said. At any rate, my prediction is on a percentage base:
1. 10% chance that he is a great coach, he has us in the tourney by year 3. We will be a stud team by year 4 and then he leaves for bigger and better things.
2. 40% chance that he has us competitive but never really good. We keep him around similar to AK. 0, maybe 1 NCAA tournament within 5 years.
3. 30% chance that we are not competitive and we average around 15-18 wins per year. We fire him after year 4.
4. 20% he is a good coach who has us very competitive year after year with an occasional big season. Him and his family love Starkville and want nothing more to be here but we fire him because we have an illusion that we should expect greatness and we have the program to attract big name coaches.

Ray was an assistant at 16-14 Clemson last year and is in year 1 at MSU. Cal was in year 1 at a traditional power in UK, and had already been to Final 4's with 2 programs and a Championship. That may be the worst comparison I have ever seen brought up.

You mayhave theworst reading comprehension of anybody on this board. And that's saying something.

You are either a babbling idiot or so obsessed withdisagreeing with my posts, you don't care how stupid it makes you look.

Or both.

Inever suggested Rayshould get MSU to the Elite 8 in year one.I posted it is reasonable to expect MSU to compete for a NIT berth in year 2 given the fluid nature of college basketball these days. I think what Calipari has done at UK is an excellant example of how quickly things can turn.

There is a bigdifference in UK basketball and MSU basketball (which I acknowledged in my post). And there is asimilardifference in an Elite 8 appearance in year one of amakeover at UKandcompeting for an NIT berth inyear 2at MSU.

Very poor effort on your part. You are the Renardo Sydney of SPS.

That was my expectation the day we hired him, and since he's at least had some control over the events since, I can't lower the measuring stick.

Stansbury got "retired" because of all the other BS that surrounded the program- had it just been wins and losses- he would have gotten 1 more year

But seriously, I expect him to find 4 guys like Isaiah Canaan and 1 guy like Jarvis Varnado, and 3 roll players like Jalen Steele (including Jalen Steele).

Next question?

three years?? Now THAT's depressing. I know he inherited a bag of ****, but I'm expecting NCAA in 3 years. If not, then I'mblaming the hirer (looking at you, Scott) and the coach. Look, we're an SEC school with top tier facilities and a decent history. If he can't rebuild it quick, we're 17'ed. Because the nextguy will REALLY have a job to do.

..is responsible for the OM football debacle?

Because even as you list everything an Ole Miss fan could dream of when it comes to watching MSU's basketball program go down the toilet, I could offer you a replica list of everything a MSU fan wanted to see happen to the OM football program.

And it all happened: Nutt ruins program; recruiting becomes a joke; search for new coach is a series of Keystone Kops pratfalls, etc. etc.

If it was up to a MSU sleeper cell to hire OM's next football coach, then that MSU sleeper cell did extraordinary work when they finagled the hiring of Freeze.

To be honest, this has to be one of the most puzzling series of events that the roller coaster that was MSU basketball could have made. I, as well as many fans, was shocked by the hire of Coach Ray over interested assistants from Kentucky and Kansas. That said, we as MSU fans, owe the man a fair shake. Reasonable expectations with the team that he should have inherited (Moultrie, Hood, and a good recruiting class) would have placed our minimum expectations at NIT with NCAA in sights. However, realistically, the program has been decimated. No one blames Moultrie for going pro, but it would remove reasonable NCAA expectations. Hood's loss removes NIT expectations. The loss of of the other guys makes us noncompetitive in Year 1 unless Coach Ray can land this class of recruits. If the recruits walk, then we have very little chance at a competitive season. That said, Year 1 is rock bottom. My guess would be 12 wins at most. As others have mentioned, we'll be able to evaluate Coach Ray based on if he can retain any of Stans' recruits. If not, then what kind of players can he fill some of the scholarships with. That will be our first indication. Sure, he doesn't have much time, but a good coach will be able to gathersome hungry players willing to work. Our second look will come from the fall recruiting period. What caliber of players can he attract? Can he keep a few in-state players? Can he land 1-2 diamonds in the rough? As next year rolls on, and we are suffering through the basketball season, we'll get a look at how good a coach and recruiter Coach Ray can be. Year 2 should be competitive, but probably 15-18 wins. We should achieve an NIT birth by Year 3 but I can wait for Year 4 if we have the recruits starting to come. I just can't see being very competitive without the current class in 3 years. We are not Kentucky. We will not land 5 McDonald's All-Americans each year. Thus, we need our young players to develop, which means they'll be men around Year 3, with more talent to follow in Years 4 and 5. A couple of good transfers could really accelerate this timeline by incorporating decent talent at a good level of maturity. Thus, I think we'll begin to know what we have next fall from his on the court coaching and the recruiting classes from this spring and next fall. However, expectations of the NIT or NCAA will be dependent on those recruits and 3-4 years is a realistic expectation for making post season play.

I've never understood why basketball fans can't understand that the NCAAs isnt a compilation of the 64...or 68... Best teams.

If we we still had Stans, that would be the expectation. If this guy isn't better than Stans, then we made a bad hire.
From the moment we got rid of Stans, all blame now goes to the new coach, and so far he hasn't done anything to stabilize the situation.

He may end up being a great coach, but for the moment he's a bust. But if you can't make it to the NCAAs at least once every 3 years, then you are bad, that seems to be our new criteria.

So Moultrie going pro and Hood leaving is all 100% onRickyRay's shoulders? The more Iread this board the more amazed I become. There are real oxygen thieves out there.
