</span>The one glaring failure under Greg Byrne's watch...
That a Princeton football coach in 1935 could order a stock Spalding leather helmet, order the same stock helmets when he moved to Michigan, add a little color and it now gives the impression of the Wolverine from the design? Huh? They are iconic in that they are a nod to the old leather helmets but there is absolutely nothing about them that gives "the impression of the wolverine".bullysleftnut said:They're iconic, and give the impression of the wolverine from the design.
The pattern at the front of the helmet, with the stripes, gives me the impression of a paw with claws extended. I probably should have been a little more specific.AssEndDawg said:That a Princeton football coach in 1935 could order a stock Spalding leather helmet, order the same stock helmets when he moved to Michigan, add a little color and it now gives the impression of the Wolverine from the design? If podunk U came up with that helmet design today they would be laughed to scorn. The only reason that the michigan design is 'iconic' or 'cool' is solely due to the tradition associated with it. The thing could have pink polka dots and be considered totally awesome if the design went back 100 years and especially if the teams that wore it had a storied history. This is reason A-1 as to why I have begged for us to settle on a helmet design and STICK WITH IT!!!! A winning tradition would help too but that is a little harder to come by.bullysleftnut said:<div>
</div><div>I don't really care that it's all coincidental. Not everything awesome has to come from a marketing department.<div>
</div><div>Fact is, they're still an iconic helmet design. Maybe because they've had a lot of historic success, maybe not - but I'd think that helmet was pretty cool looking even if they belonged to Podunk U.</div><div>
