Say what you will about the school, the team, or the colors, but that helmet design has always been legit.

Michigan's helmets have always been badass. They're iconic, and give the impression of the wolverine from the design. Very well done.

I'd love to figure out a way to do something similar with our helmets without them ending up looking cartoonish.

And they make no sense at all. Michigan ripped them off from Princeton. Those stripes are supposed to be tiger stripes. What the hell is a wolverine doing with tiger stripes?

They are Adidas' flagship school...

For $66.5 mil over 8 yrs, I don't much see how they can complain.

Meanwhile, our current Adidas contract actually COSTS us a couple hundred k/yr I believe. The one glaring failure under Greg Byrne's watch...

For reference, the other contracts pay:
OM $13.9 mil over 7 years(NIKE)
Alabama $30 mil over 8 yrs(NIKE)
Auburn $27.45 mil over 7 yrs(UA)

(not the gloves)

Meeechigan's helmet maybe old and sorta lame, but everyone knows that design.

One day MSU might have a logo/design automatically recognizable to all sports fans

Our initial contract was negotiated in 09 at the height of the financial crisis, so that may have to do with it. Current contract lasts until 2014.

Agreed. No effort put into those at all.<div>

It's my only real complaint from his tenure...

"The current agreement between MSU and Adidas, which took effect in ‘09 and runs through 2014, is admittedly below market: $330,248 a year in wholesale products, with the opportunity to purchase more at the wholesale price. MSU and adidas remain in an exclusive negotiating window for the rest of this year, and AD Scott Stricklin is in pursuit of a market correction. The school is currently spending $500,000 a year out-of-pocket to fill the rest of its equipment needs."

OM's Nike contract is worth 6x as much.

That a Princeton football coach in 1935 could order a stock Spalding leather helmet, order the same stock helmets when he moved to Michigan, add a little color and it now gives the impression of the Wolverine from the design? Huh? They are iconic in that they are a nod to the old leather helmets but there is absolutely nothing about them that gives "the impression of the wolverine".

Plus they gave a non-negotiation window before the last one was up. "Either take this or go see what you can get in the open market, but our next offer probably won't be as generous"

Also, based on our apparell sales/revenue during the Russell era, I don't blame adidas one bit for low balling us. We had jackshit going for us in the summer of 09. The next deal, whether it be with adidas, Under Armor, New Balance, or whoever we go with, should substantially jump in value.

Our next deal should be for, at a minimum, about $2mil/yr... regardless of who actually gives us the money.

Adidas has no doubt made a killing on us.

that design had nothing to do with tigers or wolverines.

It was put in place as a way for the players to be ID downfield. I belive that as the passing game evolved it was used for that purpose since everyone pretty much wore the same color helmet at the time.</p>

The pattern at the front of the helmet, with the stripes, gives me the impression of a paw with claws extended. I probably should have been a little more specific.

</div><div>I don't really care that it's all coincidental. Not everything awesome has to come from a marketing department.<div>
</div><div>Fact is, they're still an iconic helmet design. Maybe because they've had a lot of historic success, maybe not - but I'd think that helmet was pretty cool looking even if they belonged to Podunk U.</div><div>

If podunk U came up with that helmet design today they would be laughed to scorn. The only reason that the michigan design is 'iconic' or 'cool' is solely due to the tradition associated with it. The thing could have pink polka dots and be considered totally awesome if the design went back 100 years and especially if the teams that wore it had a storied history. This is reason A-1 as to why I have begged for us to settle on a helmet design and STICK WITH IT!!!! A winning tradition would help too but that is a little harder to come by.
