Just vocalized the basic consensus of this board that while it was infact a historic hire for the SEC, the man was a below average coach. Pointed out that after he was fired, a few sports writers pissed and moaned that State had made a mistake and said State could do no better than Crooms. Mullen's current record proves them wrong.

Brian's world! Party Time! Excellent! Party on Bob.

I only got to hear about 15 minutes.........boycotting ESPN tonight. Ran down list of current players that are not Croom's or Mullen re-recruited. Croom got paid a lot of money and still sucked. Had rather fought a thousand Rebs at the 2008 Egg Bowl rather than be pitied by one of them.

The General is spot on re: Sly Crooms.

Don't want to see another mile long Croom thread but HD6 was dead on when he was saying that Croom will never be warmly welcomed back the way Sherrill is at MSU now no matter how much time passes and its because of the direct polar opposites of the attitudes and leadership of both. Sherrill is THE coach that taught the MSU fanbase how to win and BE winners and to not take a backseat to anyone in this conference. No matter his last 3 years nobody can deny that he transformed the attitude of our fanbase in that we can expect to have a quality program just like our conference brethren do. Croom on the other hand really didn't buy into the job from day one and did more poor mouthing about our program than any rival needed to ever do. He brought back the old inferior attitude to MSU from the pre-Sherrill days and blamed everybody and everything for our program's troubles BUT himself. Its kind of ironic that both men were from the Bama lineage and yet one used what he learned from that to instill pride in the MSU program and fanbase while the other seemed to lead our program with the constant attitude that we were too disadvantaged to every compete in this conference like his beloved Bama. Mullen is very much cut from the same cloth as Sherrill as far as attitude and pride with the program and that is the big reason Mullen has been embraced so positively by the MSU fanbase like he has and also why I believe Sherrill and Mullen have hit off so well like they have. Croom's "woe is us" attitude running our program along with he and his buddy Woody's total ineptness in running a college offense spelled doom from the word go to MSU football ever really being successful under his direction.

Agreed.

Also, the Mullens impression cracked me the hell up. "eehhh We don't talk about promos here."

you touched on what bothered and still bothers me about Crooms.

If you look at Joker Phillips, you see a man that represents his university well. You see someone that appreciates the chance he has been given. Now it appears Joker may not work out for Kentucky- and he may just be a guy that is a much better coordinator than head coach. But you can at least appreciate him for what he is trying to do.

But Crooms had a different attitude. He never seemed appreciative to be the head coach at State and everything that went along with it. It was as if he was doing us a favor. I've never seen someone so unappreciative of such an opportunity. It just never made sense.

Also, on the show Brian reminded us (me) about Crooms saying it would take 10 years **TEN 17ING YEARS** to make State a winner again. That got me pissed off about Crooms all over again. Then he and Bob start adding point totals up from the Crooms years and compaired them to the Mullen years. Its quite unbelievable.

Let's not deem Larry Templeton blameless here.....

He never seemed appreciative to be the head coach at State and everything that went along with it. It was as if he was doing us a favor.

Croom didn't want the job from the beginning. Templeton BEGGED him to take it instead of going Jimbo Fisher's direction. It's no wonder Croom had the attitude he did when his boss gave him the ropes with no accountability.

I actually spoke with Templeton at a QB Club meeting in 2006. While he did say the right things ie Sylvester would have to win like anyone else, you could so obviously tell that he'd bet it all on him to stay in the good graces of the SEC and never had any delusions about competing for championships. It was almost as if Croom was the boss and LT was the subordinate.

The Croom experience is similar to PolK II in several ways

1. While they inherited programs at the opposite ends of the spectrum, they both came in expecting their names and reputations to do their jobs for them and were lazy on the recruiting trail.

2. They spent most of their time complaining about how disadvantaged they were.

3. They tried to keep expectations "realistic", instead of trying to make fans and players believe we could win championships.

4. Too loyal and stubborn to make necessary changes.

5. They tasted success, but left things a complete mess.

I heard this the other day and I'm still pissed about it-

Not only did LT choose Crooms over Jimbo Fisher- BUT Gary-freaking-Patterson wanted the job back then. A family member of Gary's works at State, gave LT his resume....Patterson called LT multiple times and LT never even returned his call.

We turned down Gary Patterson and Jimbo Fisher to hire Crooms. It's officially the biggest debacle of a hire by an AD in the history of the SEC.

We don't agree on a lot of things but coach and I do on this. Croom was Slive and LT's choice and that was just fine with LT since he was too damn lazy to do anything else. MSU paid for decades with incompetent leadership at the top and I just hope we don't fall back into that with Byrne gone. The proof will be in the pudding but I know for a fact Jimbo was really pissed at how the hiring went down. Croom is now a millionaire because of our stupidity. But what is new. We elected another idiot to be President and we still have folks trying to defend mediocrity. why am I not surprised about anything.

Damn. Just....damn. I knew we turned down Jimbo Fisher (which was also supposedly a package deal that would've included Chizik as DC). But we turned down Gary Patterson, too? Un-damn-believable. There's just no words for how incompetent LT really was. I'm essentially speechless. I repeat, Damn! Just....damn!

There is no way we turned down either Jimbo Fisher or Gary Patterson or Shaka Smart for that matter. Guess you can add Steve Spurrier to the list as well! Our football program when Croom left and basketball when Stansbury left were not attractive for coaches like that to take at the time. Assistant coaches who are nationally known names are waiting for the Florida States and Tennessees of the world to call. Admit, no one on this board knew who Dan Mullen or Rick Ray were before we signed them...

I knew who Mullen was. I would think the informed college football fan would have known the offensive coordinator for the number 1 team in the nation.

It's proven, undisputed FACT LT turned down Jimbo to hire Crxxms.

I thought Jimbo was in consideration when we hired Mullen.

You mean to tell me that Jimbo was spurned by us for Croom, then put his name in the hat again before we signed Mullen only to withdraw it later?

I honestly had no idea who he was. That offense was more known for Meyer and Tebow than Mullen...until we hired him. And then we all knew it was because of Mullen.

We absolutely did turn Jimbo Fisher down to hire Croom. Fisher wanted the job. That is a fact. I have no idea about Gary Patterson. Even if that is true, he was a nobody then so it's hard to hold that against Templeton. Shaka Smart was not interested in even talking to us. And everyone who knew anything about college football knew who Mullen was. I was shocked we were able to get him.

How could you not know who the OC at Florida was?

We turned down Jimbo Fisher I know- just heard the Patterson story. Patterson had just gotten TCU going, but he had still won 10+ games as a HC. Crooms was a nobody.

The Shaka Smart thing was Tenureplan being a smartass. Supposedly Smart's agent told Strick he wouldnt consider even talking to us unless we were planning to pay 3-3,5M per season. We moved on after that.

PatDog speak the truth on Fisher, Jimbo is a cousin to some pretty stout

MSU alum's, we had him in the bag when Lonnie vetoed and went with Croom.

It seems that Gary Patterson made some kind of disparaging remark about State being a step down from where he was at the time his name was being considered.

D'oh! I knew Chizik didn't sound right. You're correct, it was Muschamp & Fisher on that staff together that was to be the package deal. Which makes the hiring of Crxxms even worse.
