Having selected Jon Michael Marlin for a scholarship over Stephen "Beaver" Gostkowski. How'd that turn out?

Was that Beaver wanted to play baseball, and apparently State and Ole Miss didn't want him for baseball, but Memphis gave him a scholarship and he walked onto the football team and the rest is history.

He actually was benched at Madison Central for John Skelton, who walked onto MSU's team before having some academic issues from what I have heard.

You can pin many things on JWS, but missing out on Gostkowski, I don't think that's on him.

Beaver didn't get completely benched, though. He did lose his job on FGs under 45 or so yards and extra points, but he still kicked off and handled the really long FGs.

He wanted to play both and OM was his first choice. He was dating Jill Rosamond, Micheal Rosamond's sister (I realize I probably don't have to tell you Todd, but for those that don't know, Micheal played BB at OM). She was at OM, he had every intention of following. I am pretty sure he had an opportunity to play baseball at OM but when he tanked during his senior year, his football offer was pulled. I half jokingly mentioned MSU to him and he was pretty quick to dismiss it. Memphis told him he could do both.

JWS didn't choose anyone over Beaver. Beaver just wasn't coming to MSU.

As for Skelton, to say he had some academic issues is like saying Dontae Walker had some drug issues. Skelton literally made a 7 on his first test at MSU. Great guy, but not bright.

He was a good soccer player and damn good kicker. He finished up at Ole Miss and is a realtor here in Jackson now.

really +#%*%# the dog on this one. Combine that with your pix of the "Mississpi State" incident, and I'd say you're gonna get invited to Greg Byrne's house for dinner in, like, never.

Beaver went to Memphis after Brent Smith came to state to walk on. Beaver wasn't skipped for JMM. John Skelton tried to walk on at State with about 6 others. None were ready and Coach Grant ran them to death until they quit. JWS was a great special teams coach.

It's just too damned funny. I'd have never mentioned it except for the fact that your "Mississpi State" pictures got sent around the world. I trust that you can see the humor in the fact that you unwittingly have wreacked havoc on the MSU athletic department not once, but twice in like 45 days. What's next big fella?

hit FG's from 45+ in warm-ups on a 30 degree night in Batesville during the playoffs, and then put the opening KO thru the uprights, I can see why Jackie signed Marlin. Its not Jackie's fault the kid had no sack

I was at that game as well, and left hoping like hell we wound up signing him. Didn't count on him being a giant ***.

signed anyone as ****** as Marlin, you'd personally drive to Starkville to shoot him. And while it may not have been a bad idea to sign him, it was damn sure a bad idea to trot his *** out there after you realized he sucked balls. And that's all on Jackie. I'd have rather just gone for two, somebody get that damn chart!

Probably so

"And while it may not have been a bad idea to sign him, it was damn sure a bad idea to trot his *** out there after you realized he sucked balls. "

I'm sure Jackie anticipated he would get better with time. Marlin was one of the best kickers I've seen in HS. He buckled, had no sack...etc...but you really had to give him a couple of years because of the talent he had...Just one of a handful of guys that really let us down under Jackie that would have made a world of difference

i played with beaver and skelton at MC. Skelton was a very good kicker but Beaver was the best. Beaver did entertain MSU, but wanted to play baseball and polk didn't want him. Also in 1999 the year MC won the state title during the north championship at clinton Beaver hit the cross bar on a kickoff right before halftime. The next time up on the opening kickoff after halftime he nailed it thru the uprights perfectly. Never seen anything like it. my freshman year. I'm still pissed we didn't get a ring the next year. D*mn f**ckin rain in vicksburg, we were definately the best team in the state that year too

Chris Gardner used to do the same thing in high school. Then he kicked for JWS and was only an average college kicker. You never know which high school phenom kicker is going to do it in college - don't know why that is.
