On this I am 100% in agreement

Schumer needs to go

Biden overstayed by 4 years +

Nancy Pelosi by 2 to 3 years

Bernie Sanders needs to find that retirement home

There are plenty more

I think at the moment Trump is OK from aging standpoint but I would say that at the end of his term he will be heading downhill

Aging is not a sin

Just a fact of life

I just don’t understand why these people want to keep doing the job. If I’m still working a full time job at 80, something has gone horribly wrong in my life. Same at 70 for that matter.

I’ll work until the day I die. Can’t imagine not being intellectually engaged at some level.

Sander’s and Trump seem to be aging well, though it seems like Trump may be having health issues.

You could add some Supreme Court justices as well. Ginsburg holding on was so stubborn.

He is even worse than Biden. We need to either have age restrictions or cognitive ability tests. Not trying to be ageist but this guy should not have a say on the future of this country.

Fortunately McConnell is done after 2026. Here are some more that need to retire:

Danny Davis 84
Jim Clyburn 85
Nancy Pelosi 85
Steny Hoyer 84
Maxine Waters 87
Bill Pascreall 87
Grace Napolitano 88
Bernie Sanders 84

To answer your question, in my mind it can only be one or two things: Ego or $$$$.

Two reasons:
  1. Ego/prestige
  2. It's an easy job. Lots of recess time, first class perks, and a huge staff to do all the legwork.
If these jobs were too much of a grind people would retire. I hosted a couple of public officials over the years and it was embarrassing. They show up with photographers and personal assistants that open doors for them.

I retired at a relatively young age. I actually missed my work but I didn't miss 55 hrs per week, late night calls, and very little time off. I could have stepped back to a job that wasn't as demanding of my time but my ego wouldn't allow me to report to somebody that knew less than me. I did volunteer work, a lot of home maintenance that had been neglected, lots of travel, and played a lot of golf.

Have to disagree with you on Trump and mental issues

He is sharp as can be at 79

Now like anyone he will have dome senior moments but he is far superior to the Aging Senators and some other folk

With that said he will have some foggy moments but not like Biden which was a walking corpse and should have been removed by the 25th Amendment or resigned and have Kamala Harris take over

Now to be clear I think Harris was terrible and a closet drunk but she was coherent as a drunk could be

In either case neither Biden or Harris if she were to become President were competent leaders and both had staffs running the White House and making decisions probably without consulting Biden or Harris again if President

Just my opinion

Amazing that they can't help themselves and continually act like the internet isn't forever...

FYI, the internet says Pascreall was already dead when you posted this. So, you can check him off. Multiple others on your list have already retired, or are retiring at the end of this term.
Iowa's own Chuck Grassley says hello at age 93, and refuses to commit to this being his last term in office.

Anyone else wonder how large this list would be if we set the cutoff at the classic retirement age of 65?

I'm fine with 70 or 75. I used to be vehemently against term limits, but it's increasingly clear Congress and the SCOTUS should be term limited. That would mostly take care of the geriatric problems. Hard cap Congress at 18 years in either the House or the Senate, 24 years total. Hard cap the SCOTUS at 20 years. Some anti corruption and provisions against self dealing would be nice, too.

I just looked up over 65, here is geminis response:

61 out of 100 Senators (61%) are 65 or older, while 187 out of 435 House Representatives (43%) have passed their 65th birthday

I would be good with a bit older, but any way you slice it having the majority of the senate over 65 is not ideal. We need more young leaders.

Especially when there is no hope for advancement.

Mitch will never get a cabinet position.
He will never be VP or POTUS.

Yeah, but does that mean clocking in to a 9-5?

I will retire, but I want to volunteer at our local youth sports - be a board member or maybe make $55 a night umping little league.

Stay active, but not work a full-time traditional job.

Heck, the old dudes at Trader Joe's always look like they are having fun.

The voters keep voting them in. :(
