I noticed we won't play Memphis in Autozone this year. This hugs my sack. Always a good time and turnout. Anyone know why we cut this out this year?

But it made me laugh...

Sadly, when MSU plays at Trustmark park, the turnout is too good. 17er is packed, and the staff/employees are NEVER prepared for the crowd, especially in the beer line.

I dont know why it has to be in Birmingham every year. Memphis and Jackson both have great parks to hold the tournament. I wish they would at least start alternating

It's a beautiful park and first class in every way, but it's just not big enough. As for Memphis, it's an average of about 2 hours further than Birmingham for fans to travel to. The only 2 schools Memphis would be closer for are Arkansas and Mississippi. For MSU, it's about a push. Birmingham is closer to Starkville, but for many of our fans, Memphis would be closer. I think the biggest thing in Birmingham's favor though is that they've proven they can consistently deliver great attendance for the tournament. I don't see the tournament moving any time soon.

I've never been to the baseball tourney. What does the average attendence look like for it that Trustmark isn't big enough?

ETA: I wouldn't think the travel distance mattered that much seeing as how the SEC had that brilliant idea to play the hoops tourneyin 17inJacksonville, FL.

is that the contract that we have with Memphis is probably a one for one deal- play in Starkville one year, and then Memphis the next, likely Autozone.

I think Cohen wanted to make the schedule a little bit easier midweek wise because of the fact that we have now had two straight losing season and because we have so many freshmen, so we're playing more SWAC teams. I also think that may be in line with what the athletic dept. wants all sports to do- play more Mississippi teams. For example- football playing JSU and now Alcorn and of course USM, basketball playing Valley, and baseball playing everyone.

I do agree, though. Playing Memphis in Autozone is a great idea and I would not mind playing them home and home every year like we did many times.

of politics involved with the SEC Tournament being in Birmingham. And I know that the RV hookup thing is a big issue as well. Kind of hard to do that at Peabody Place or on Beale St.

Nonetheless, I would like to see it moved around. Turner Field makes as much sense as the Hoover Met to me as far as location.

didn't we play Memhis in Starkville last year and the we get them in Starkville again this year? I'm pretty sure 2 years ago, we played them twice in Memphis. 1st day was at Autozone and the next day was at their home field.

I actually agree that the Trustmark Park is too small thing is a myth. I know that we had at least 10,000 for a couple of Gov. Cup games.

Andthe average is usually in the 8,000 - 10,000 range. Trustmark capacity is about 7,400.

Jackson metro-area itself may would be a bigger issue than Trustmark Park I think.

The largest crowd to ever see a game at the park was the 2007 Governor's Cup in which 8,012 fans watched the Mississippi State Bulldogs defeat the Ole Miss Rebels 14-9.

They can cram a lot of people out there, and there are some standing room only areas as well.

Granted, Hoover may be more comfortable because of the fact that people would have an actual seat.
