Looking at the statistics, it's amazing how poorly our DL starters played.

Let's first look at the four starters of Eulls, Boyd, Cherrington, and Autry:

Autry- 37 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles. I say a pretty decent year. I think he clearly got better as the season progressed.
Boyd- 33 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks. Not very good for what was supposed to be our best lineman.
Eulls- 26 tackles, 1 TFL, ZERO sacks. Terrible. No other way around it. Can't have a starting DE play like that.
Cherrington- 21 tackles, 1 TFL, ZERO sacks. Terrible. No other way around it. Can't have a starting DT play like that.

Frankly this is pretty bad. Our 4 starting defensive lineman combine for 5.5 sacks on the entire season and only 14 TFL? To me that is the biggest indictment of Wilson's inability to run an effective defense, especially at the position he coaches.

Now let's look at the guys backing up the starters. We will go with Quay Evans, Preston Smith, Ryan Brown, PJ Jones, Devin Jones, Curtis Virges, and Shane McCardell:

Preston Smith - 32 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 5.5 TFL, 1 forced fumble. The fact this guy didn't get more playing time astounds me. He grossly outperformed Eulls. Don't care if it was against 2nd team offenses. The guy is first on the team in sacks and 4th in TFL and he almost never played.

I will combine the other 6 guys and just show their total stats. The other 6 combined for 64 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 6.5 TFL, 1 forced fumble.

So for a bunch of guys that played very little compared to our starters, they combined for 21 less tackles, 1.5 MORE sacks, and 2 less TFL. Basically the point of this is to show that our starting 4 barely outperformed our backups. That should never happen, especially when the guy running that side of the football is supposed to be a DL specialist. To me, just from a statistical perspective, our DL just flat didn't get it done this year. From the eye test, I think it's pretty clear too. The unit we thought had the potential to be the 2nd best on the team was arguably the worst. Only person that falls on is Wilson.
