Looking WAY ahead - Defense

It seems like every article I've ready lately is either in regards to Dak or our defense. Everyone is talking about Dak on the site so I want to focus on the latter. How is everyone feeling about the defense this year? We all know we return 22 of 25 guys from a year ago, but how good can they actually be? Obviously, I'm hoping they are as good of a defense as we've ever had, but I wonder if all of this hype isn't just fantasy land. To be honest, it scares the s*** out of me when people start talking positively about anything regarding MSU football, hell MSU anything. I'd just rather the media forget about us until the season starts. We aren't a program built to handle expectations, never have been.

Let's face it, we have to get pressure on the QB, that's what it comes down to. We started doing that towards the end of the year, and it worked out tremendously. BUT, can we consistently get pressure with 4 down lineman against the SEC elite? In year's past, we have been unable to do so and to adjust to this, we have typically brought pressure from an OLB/MLB, which has left us vulnerable at times. These two ends Ryan Brown and Preston Smith both have the goods to get it done. Both have good size and speed, but are they good enough to take on tackles from LSU, Bama, aTm, etc? Is our defense the kind of unit that can rise to the occassion? Obviously, our first 3 games are cupcakes, and the D should perform at a very high level. What would y'all want to see out of this group to give you a good feeling going into the LSU game? I don't think any of the first three teams should score more than 10 points or go over 250 yards of offense against us. If we are giving up high teens or even twenties to those teams, we are in trouble.

Just to get it out of the way, I think our D has the opportunity and talent to be an elite group. Possibly the best in the league this year, but then again, I've thought that in years past. I just want to start up some discussion and get everyone's thoughts to gauge whether anyone else is having anxiety over the hype these guys are receiving.

good post, and I agree. We should be pretty stacked on D. We have good depth at almost every position. I wish we had one more top-end freak talent on the DL besides Chris Jones. Maybe that's Preston Smith this year. He was very close to going pro after last season, and would have been a mid round pick. Maybe he can develop into what Autry never could.

It's hard not be extremely wooly about this years D.

Matthew Wells is bad *** too.

Let me just say this. I spoke with Deep this week and he does not tend to be

too wooly most of the time. For the first time in years he is actually optimistic about both sides of the ball. It appears Dillon Day's injury is responding well and he should be 100%. He believes our defense is 22 deep maybe deeper and is going to be nasty.

It's all about Safety. We are in good shape pretty much everywhere and are going to be a good defense as long as safety doesn't kill us. If we have safeties ready to perform, then it's a question of whether this D can be special. I think that's all about a pass rushing DE emerging and Nick James being as advertised, and avoiding key injuries. I think we know McKinney and C. Jones are going to be good. We know Eulls provides a good option at the other DT spot. We know our DE are adequate. We have proven players at CB. We should feel good about our LB replacements as they are plenty experienced. If we have a good DE pass rusher and can add an NFL prospect quality Nick James, it seems like it should take teams with almost special offensive lines to be able to move the ball consistently against us.

The depth is amazing. We have at least one extra player at every position that I would be comfortable starting.

DT - Jones, Jones, Eulls
DE - Smith, Brown, Jefferson
MLB - McKinney, Brown
OLB - Wells, Jackson, Brown
CB - Love, Calhoun, Redmond
S - Cox, Hughes, Market

Then consider backups like Virges, Nelson, Nick James, Dez Harris, Jiles, Deonte Evans... all either have good experience or have shown tons of potential.

Is Dee Arrington on the team? I know he's battled injuries his entire career, but can't remember if he's still on the roster.

I read somewhere that he's expected to redshirt this season while he gets healthy, and possibly also apply for a medical hardship for 2013 since he only played in 3 games. Maybe he could potentially have two years left in 2015 and 2016??

But regardless I don't think he's expected to play this year. I think he was moved to LB for the little bit he did during bowl practices.

I haven't felt this good about a defense since smoot, Prather, cooper, and gang defense. We should be fun to watch this year.

I'm going to wait until the season starts, instead of getting sucked into any hype. If life has taught me anything (especially being a fan of MSU), things are never as good as they seem, nor are they as bad as they seem. I think our team will be above average, which is middle of the pack in the SEC. We should be an above average D, but not a Bama caliber D, like some are talking about.

i have followed State for 5 decades and the 98 -99 defense was the best defense

we ever had. After watching this years practices we are not that elite
but are damn close. you have to realize that years defense did not face all these spread offenses we see now. We will not come close to the ypg average we gave up but scoring our Scoring "D" will be right there. And our offense is going to put up a hell of a lot points. This is the first season since then i feel we can win any game. If we win at LSU we can win the SEC.

And the signals from Sockless Joe Lee were still a mystery.

I'm with you on 100% of this...

Personally, these were the 2 most wool-inspiring things I've read about our defense yet among the large amount of ***-kissing that's been happening in the media...

Nick James, a highly rated defensive tackle coming out of high school a season ago, is developing quickly

One such defensive back to watch is Justin Cox, who was a high-profile junior college transfer to Mississippi State last season that ultimately played more of a reserve role at cornerback. Now he’s been moved to safety, where he said he’s much more comfortable.

At 6-3 and in the neighborhood of 200 pounds, he fits the part. Mullen called him a “violent, aggressive player with some toughness -- and he runs a 4.3 [40-yard dash] so he can cover lots of ground out there.”

You can see the light coming on for him,” Collins said. “He’s going to be another kid with tremendous physical gifts. With more confidence we’ll see him make a big impact for us.”

This got me to wondering how many do We have on defense that have an NFL future? Obviously McKinney and Chris Jones. How many others have the potential to reach the NFL?

I agree. That 80 defense was a monster and pretty good in 81 also.

I guess everything is relative. Southern Miss. ripped our defense apart in our '80 homecoming game, and LSU ripped our '98 defense apart in Baton Rouge. Outside of those 2 games, I will agree that our defense in those years was good.

For sure Preston Smith. I think the other two with the most potential are Calhoun and B. Brown. Wells is kind of a unique athlete and could fit in somewhere. Cox will need to have a breakout year at safety. Haven't seen enough of Redmond or Nick James. The other two Browns have potential depending on how they develop the next 2-3 years.

I would add Love but he stayed injured so often I think that hurts his chances.

Until they prove different, JLD's D in the late 90's are demonstrably better. DE's better step up if they hope to get pressure on the QB.

This year's edition has going for it that half the teams are starting new QBs and a load of new OL.
