Looks like Maye is a bust.....

Apparently Clemson transfer linebacker Brandon Maye
hasn’t been impressive in practices. Well, at least in the irked
vocabulary of Mullen this morning: “He’s got a long way to go to get a
spot, to get playing time.”

Well, maybe he is, but it's way too early to tell that. Reports from the open practices said he didlook good. Some of Mullen's comments does, I'm sure, reflect some below-expectations practices. Some of it is likely adjustment to a new place, new scheme, etc. Some of it is coachspeak/motivation.

Every media report or practice report I have read has said how good he looks and that he is a great leader. I think this is just Mullen keeping a fire lit under him.

Nutt: Masoli is the starter effective immediatly from day one and we are going to kick off the other kid who was here in our program working hard to make room for his scholarship.

Mullen: Maye has to work hard tobeat out the other guys who have been here longer. At present he is not working as hard as I would like, we will have to see how much playing time he gets as the season progresses.

Guess which approach is best for team morale? Guess which approach inspires players to work harder? Guess who is the better coach?

Same here. I think it is Mullen reinforcing the you will be given nothing mantra. Folks outside the program have been inserting this guy as the starter ever since the day he signed on. I think the staff is trying to drive home the point, not only to Mr. Maye, but the entire team that you will play when you earn that right.

4 letter utensils on the left since left is 4 letters: fork

5 letter utensils on the right since right is 5 letters: spoon, knife

Jerrel Powe puts everything on the left. Fork, Spun, Nife

two of which are seniors...Jamie Jones and Brandon Wilson, then add Bohanna into the mix. Of course the sheep had Maye penciled in as the savior of the defense from day one.</p>

We're in a lot better shape at LB than most people think we are. I know we lost a lot from last season, but we've got a lot of good players coming back. I do think Maye's going to wind up playing a lot, and probably starting, though.

Mullen said it (coach speak), but Marcello is going to make damn sure that it's spun to stir **** up. I don't think I've ever read anything positive since he's become our beat writer.

If he is not with the first team at the end of next week, he will probably not be starting against Memphis.
Maye left Clemson because he got beat out by for the starting spot and it looks like he may not earn a starting spot at STATE either.
I hope I am wrong, only time will tell..

Something tells me Mullen would've given Cam Newton a hard time too if he played at State.

I mean, it's the same vibe you get from a bad poker player holding pocket kings trying to decide how much to raise you. Just something in his body language seems a little disingenuous.

I actually thought this post was dripping with sarcasm.

If maye doesnt trot out there with the first team at Memphis and it's not due to grades, injury, or discipline, we need to load up on some ACC teams on the schedule considering his numbers at clemson

..that a new one.

My body language would be off too if I was practicing everyday in stifling heat & humidity, fighting off dehydration & exhaustion at every turn, getting run until I puke, & having to listen to a coach scream in my ear for 2 hours non-stop.

Maye will be fine. In Maye, Mullen thought he was getting a Dick Butkus clone. Turns out all he was getting is a serviceable SEC LB.

..anyway, I'll leave reading body language to you.

All I know is I recently saw a video of Mullen where he needed a shave.

I think Mullen might feel better about life in general if he shaved. That's as far as I go with the body language reading thing.

wouldn't one of them have been moved to outside linebacker last year? Or allowed to play in the middle so the Chris White could be moved to the outside instead of starting a 5th year walkon?

I'm betting it's just coach speak anyway, but I thinkState needs Maye to be good, not just a serviceable backup.
