made the national news and USM didn’t want to be perceived as a racist institution
by the national media, they brought the hammer down on the students. I wonder
if the punishment would have been as harsh if it were a northern school or
whether or not it would have been news worthy at all.

so I think it is completely justified. Had they been just a pack of students, who gives a damn. Freedom of speech and all that noise.

I do think they should suspend them for a few games next year and give them a chance to get their scholarships reinstated after a year with good behavior.

It's that difference that created a harsher punishment.

correctly, they were only removed from the band and had their pep-band scholarship removed, which I agree with. I'm not sure how much money a pep-band scholarship is worth but I would assume it's not a lot of money.

The ACLU is preparing a lawsuit that is to force the NCAA to ban USM basketball from playing next season. Obama's justice department is expected to support this action.

I think he was about as serious as the USM band was when they were asking the question.

They'd have scholarships to Ole Miss, and wouldn't have been in that NCAA playoff venue.

Had they been a whole lot smarter, they'd have full-ride academic scholarships at MSU, and would be too busy doing homework to be in the band.

And if they were, they wouldn't be at the NCAA playoff venue, either. Regardless.

it just means that they are going to have to buy their books next fall.

Of course with USM being the "arts school" of Mississippi, their scholarships were probably worth a lot more than MSU where most of our guys were engineers trying to hook up with female flute players and get into football games for free.

I went to USM on a band recruiting trip. After I saw one of their drum ensemble guys hide music from another drummer because he "put his music in the wrong spot" and then chewed the guy out for it and saw random band members physically moving people back in position that they thought were "out of position" during the pre-game show of a live football game- I had seen enough.

Heck, I wasn't going to do college band at all until one of my high school friends talked me into it and assured me that they weren't a bunch of douches like USM.

that their marching band scholarships are about the same as ours or less. Their music majors probably get significantly more money than ours, but it would be in the form of academic scholarships through the music department. So you're right, they're probably going to be buying books next semester. If it was just their pep band scholarships that got revoked, they're only buying one or two more books than they usually do, but that's not what would happen here(they'd be out of the whole program) and probably not there either.

When I wasin schools I had a Friend who was in the band andhe was from Alabama. Iremember him sayingband members who came to MSU fromanother state had the out of state tuition's waived. If USM has the same deal and they are from out of state they could lose more.

I think they were pretty stupid not knowing that PR is a US territory and he did not need any green card however if he was from another S.American country wouldn't any one of us have had the right to ask that question? I think the school has gone over board on this.

No. Because you don't have to have a green card to go college in the United States.

It wasa chant that madefun of the color of his skin. Granted, I'massuming they aren't just simply misinformed about the need for a green card and that they wouldn't have yelled that at a German, Polish, Russian, Canadian, etc.I'm betting that's a pretty safe assumption. Good for the school.

That's how it is at Ole Miss, though. It's a pretty sweet deal because their out-of-state is ridiculous.
