Good to hear. Very little chance that Sandberg makes it to Starkville- we have to sign another QB.

Is Sandberg

a likely first-rounder? If so, Mike Bianco says 'caveat emptor.'

He's a top 3 rounds guy most likely...and his quote after his last football game was very telling:

Cord lost in the 7A semis 35-18 to St. Thomas Aquinas and Cord was 20-of-36 for 218 yards and one touchdown. Cord noted that the loss obviously hurt especially since "It was my last game as a (Manatee) Hurricane and maybe my last football game ever"

Cord has also declined to play in 2 different football All-Star games to get ready for baseball. It just doesnt look good for him to make it to campus. Football will be there for him in 4 years after he peters out in AA- and he will have some cash in the bank

I had hopes his dad who never broke through the farm ranks would discourage him from it, but it doesn't look that way. If my son was good enough and serious about going pro I'd almost require him to go to college... Education + a significant jump in % of those who go to college making the pros.......... HAVEN'T YOU SEEN MONEYBALL?!

Not yet known.

He's a top 50 highschool prospect - meaning he's at top 3 round guy most likely. But he hasn't even started his senior season yet...

Good to see us going after Woulard. IMO he fits what we want to do longterm better than Dobbs does...

You say that now - You wouldn't if faced with the situation. It isn't even about the chance of making the pros... it's about having a $500k + jumpstart on life - still have football - and a guaranteed free college tuition(all MLB teams write that into contracts now). Why risk all that UP FRONT for something that is unlikely to improve your standing over the next 3 years - and quite likely to hurt it?

I guess that's one way of looking at it. I guess it's a calculated risk. Of course I wouldn't risk it for Generic University, but I'd be hard pressed not to push towards a top 25 team that just produced the Pitcher of the Year, who wants to give him a free degree too.

His dad got hurt is what I understand. I wouldn't say "it did not pan out for him" play wise? Not sure.

I really, really, really want Cord here. But if I were a betting man I wold put a 5% chance that happens.

I feel like you're being sarcastic, but that tweet only has one grammatical error and no misspellings. Basically it's the most grammatically correct sentence to ever appear on SPS. Unless he has a ghost writer for his twitter account, I gotta feel good about his future scholarly endeavors.

Will there be money in the bank if he's drafted and plays football? You bet. Who wouldn't like to be the stud in college and playing sports with a signing bonus in the bank?

Will he make it big if he chooses baseball? Too early to tell but low A ball is not much fun. The great Kirk Presley didn't make it very far. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=presle001kir

I agree I was wondering if that would be picked up on...

Kirk Presley was a pitcher that blew his arm out. Sandberg is an OF'er. Much less chance of a career ending injury.

I wish Sandberg was coming- nobody wants a dual threat guy more than me. But realistically he will get a large signing bonus and see what he can do in baseball the next 4 years. If it doesnt work out, he can come back to college football as a 21 or 22 yr old Freshman

You're right, and at least he didn't say "worst", or vice versa when the the other word is proper.

The point was that Presley didn't get out of Single A five years in, when he blew his arm out.

Here's a thread of other back to college football players: http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/display.aspx?p=20934233

Presley hurt his arm in season 3- he only threw 21 innings in 1995. Never recovered from it

It's pretty simple- You can't pass up a signing bonus like that. If baseball works out for him- then great. If not- then at least he got some money to invest and set himself up for life after baseball. It's up to his parents to help him there.

There is too much risk involved in passing that money up. If he turns down the money and comes to State, he could tear his knee up on one running play his R-Freshman year and never be the same. And that could also hamper his baseball development. Then where would he be?

Coach, please listen to my argument and quit talking out your arse. Geez! He can take the money and still play football - a la Anthony Alford (Pick #112, 3rd Round). The question is if Sandberg loves football and what kind of contract he'll accept. We already know he loves baseball.

Please read this before you reply: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoo...n-miss-but-hell-take-his-mlb-payday-after-all

I understand that- but that's not going to be allowed at State from what I understand at this point. It's college or pro baseball- not and.

I watched some of the Elite 11 competition. This dude is legit. Kudos to our staff for getting in the game with him. He would be a HUGE get.
