Absolutely blew this game! IN straight stunk and CB keeps her in the freaking game, smh!!
Poor FT shooting devil finally came to collect his due I'm quite sure a Shaquille O'Neal (whose was dominant over at least 95% of the players he played against) was a bad FT shooter too comment excuse will be used again.

Our Achilles heel showed up again today which is FT's. The game would have been over, and we would have won if we could have made a freaking FT's. This is how close games against ranked teams and top 10 ten teams are won and lost. It is a crying shame that we lost because we could not make our FT's during crunch time. I just do not understand how a team cannot make FT's. They played the butts off but lost because of their FT shooting. TH played a heel of a game. If they do not fix this then we are going to have more heartaches by losing close games because of FT's. This was a Quad 1 game that we needed to win. There are not a lot of Quad 1 wins we can we because the teams in the Conference are doing bad in the non-conference games.

So you are up 66-63 with roughly 12 seconds left in regulation, and you lose 76-66 in OT? Absolutey pathetic. If Kate Harpring hadn’t somehow bought in I’d be on the “CB Out” train. This is the same crap every year. Doesn’t matter the talent level or roster makeup, it’s rinse, wash, repeat — and that’s on CB.
This is very true. Been saying this for the longest. Certain posters on this board get upset when you speak the truth about CBs Coaching. Same ole, EVERY YEAR!!

Bucwild88 you cannot use SHAQ any more about his FT shooting because he made a comment that made sense. He said that when the game was on the line, he made them when they counted. He said go and look at the tape. I looked and found him to be correct on that fact. The key word here is when the game was on the line, he made them.

Very difficult to lose this game & here we are. Nivar knew the second FT was way short. They (3 players) jumped the rebounder leaving 2 people to guard 3! Kelly should have never given the ball back. She had the entire back court to dribble around until fouled & she is a superior FT shooter compared to Nivar. Nivar wanted no part of those FT attempts. Pull your entire team off the line, keep 3 at half/ 3/4 court, other 1 in lane! Make rebounder pass the ball full length of court with Nivar shadowing. They had no timeouts! Instead you put 2 on the line, effectively removing them from defensive position. Middle school coaching gets middle school results.

Basically made a great comeback.
Had the game won with 10 seconds to go and us with 2 fouls to give.
Simply had to execute a inbounds play on our end of the court.
Lanie would have made the FT's.
This one is going to hurt for a long long time.
I said it before Taliyah Henderson needs to get more time.
She is a star in waiting, tall talented and athletic.

Well, I was taught if the ball hits you in the hands, then it is catchable. LG had the ball in her hands and somehow, she fumbled it. That play did not cost us the game; it was the Free Throw shooting which we had all talked about before the season started that this team most improve their free throw shooting as a team. CB should have had her best free throw shooters in the game during that time. IN should not have been in there. The blame falls on CB and coaching staff for not knowing who your best free throw shooters are and having them in the last 10 seconds of the game.

I'm not saying she should play but RK should be getting minimum minutes. We will continue to struggle and lose with her getting 20+ min. Yes she is a tough player but she should not be playing starter min. I said it many games ago, she is playing REALLY bad and I know CB loves her but that doesn't mean ISH, 0-7 today, 0-8 vs Tx, 0-3 vs Columbia, 3-7 vs K-St, 1-8 SD, 1-2 vs UNCG, not going any further. She doesn't start on ANY ranked team but UNC for CB. I love CB but this is not how you coach on a higher level

This is very true. Been saying this for the longest. Certain posters on this board get upset when you speak the truth about CBs Coaching. Same ole, EVERY YEAR!!
I like Coach and am thankful for what she’s done with recruiting but I couldn’t agree more. The lack of offensive sets and just standing there on the sidelines in silence while the team stalls and throws the ball away possession after possession is getting really old. We’ve seen it in games against top competition every season so far. It sure doesn’t feel like we have someone coaching offense on this team but if we do maybe the football team isn’t the only one that needs a change in that department.

And it wasn’t like our defense was very good either. We were running around out of position leaving too many players open and switching when we shouldn’t have been switching. Almost every possession LG or RK got switched out into their bigs. Louisville missed the mismatch often otherwise it wouldn’t have been close. Defense did get better when TH was in. And I thought LH was also more effective.

Curious what coach said in the post-game presser. There aren’t any excuses any more. It used to be “we were short handed” which I didn’t really buy. There were and are plenty of teams that play and beat tougher competition with key starters playing 30-35 minutes a game from season open to the ncaas. Just put that effort into coaching the players we’ve got and teaching them how to improve in the half court sets. For example, the guards have to be able to pass fake and get open to be able to make a clean post entry pass and to be able to drive the lane and either dump off the pass to the dunker spot or kick it out without getting tangled up and throwing the ball away. Also need to learn how to time the pass out of double teams. Lately the excuse has been that we are young, which is true but our top 7 or 8 have solid experience and we’re 12 games into the season.

Say what you want but at this point we have enough evidence of where our coaching stands. And with the weak ACC and lack of quad 1 opportunities left, we could be in jeopardy of hosting. I hope not but the selection committee hasn’t usually given us much credit.

I have been a CB defender from day 1. But that last 30 seconds was inexcusable. The inability to draw up something to in bound the ball and exactly what was described on the FT situation. You never put three down there in that situation EVER. I was screaming at the TV.

Someone who knows more, and pays closer attention can surely correct me, but I don't see much change in the way the team, or program is headed. It looks like we just need vastly superior talent to win key games. It doesn't look like it is happening any time soon, in spite of Nyla Brooks, Kate Harpring, etc. At some point we have to break through with wins over supposed better teams to get to another level and try to stay there. And this is not peculiar to women's basketball, it's any sport at UNC we pull for. I'm losing hope that CB is the person to do that.

Watched horrible situational basketball at the end of regulation. Wasted 2 fouls to give; unable to inbound the ball twice ; allowedc (literally ) the LVille player a direct line to the basket. Tar Heels did not look like a team prepared for bright lights. Nidar’s 2 missed FT’s were just the final blow. Shouldn’t have come to that.

The problem is with the COACHING. We have the talent... CB is an above average recruiter. I will leave it at that.

Almost unbelievable, from fringe AA to not playable. We hear about injury but I don’t see the injury? Bad knees? Tendinitis? I will say she is our best ball handler & should have been shooting the FTs.

The thing that pissed me off the most tonight was seeing a leader on the team go to the bench to grab a drink of water as we started a TO and communicate with a family member in the crowd telling her to shoot the ball. The huddle had already started….. great idea family member- she airballed a quick release 3 early in the shot clock 2 possessions later.

under no circumstances should that ever happen.

I said earlier her teams never seem to do the little things that are the margins when talent level is relatively equal. As many of you have posted out, that flows from the top and a coaching staff that also doesn’t seem to pay attention to the small details (like inbounds plays, defensive switching rotations, having the right people on the floor in an end of game obvious foul situation, not allowing parents to coach from the stands DURING a mid-game huddle, etc.). It sure seems to me that year after year, from All American down to walk on, the girls usually don’t execute under pressure because they aren’t prepared for it mentally or physically by CB.

I was at the game. In warm ups we missed a lot more shots (with no one guarding our players) than I think they should be missing. Elina, her shots in pregame were off. If players can't consistently hit shots wide open we are in trouble. RK minutes have to be cut. If she isn't hitting shots she adds little value to the team. She is short and her defense doesn't help the team at all. The 2 point guards today shot 1 of 15, you can't win with that shooting. Elina had her worse game by a wide margin and I don't expect her to be off like that moving forward.
There were times I didn't like the mix of players on the court. The team needs to get NB going again, she played only 8 minutes, all in the first half. We had 5 players on the court that looked like they didn't want to take the shot. I credit TH for stepping up to take shots today. She played a great game. As poorly as we looked we still should have won the game. Missed free throws and turnovers killed us. The players have to hit the free throws and the players have to protect the ball. I think blaming the coach is the least of our problems. This is a young team, we are going to lose some more games. CB planned to have BT and RK back and healthy. I just don't think it will be this year for BT and not likely ever again for RK. In RK we lost a very valuable player that CB was depending on her leadership and her play on the court and it just hasn't happened. I do think that CB has to determine if she is going to play 2 bigs or not. Running 3 guards under 6 foot on the court isn't working either. I think we would be better off with NB at at the shooting guard. The one thing we don't have to worry about her is that she isn't afraid to shoot the ball. NB will give us a taller and long armed player. I'd like to see Zubich play meaningful minutes.
The referees let the players play today. I don't think our team likes to play a physical game.

To sum this all up. We have a good team and I do believe we will get better as the season moves forward. Some players minutes will increase and some will decrease. We laid an egg today and should have still won the game. CB in her recruiting this year was looking to add another point guard for a reason. I think she feels like she needs a player that is fast and can beat their defender with the dribble. RK cannot get by her defender. Elina can but she can't play all 40 minutes.

Too often this team appears to lack ANY court awareness. Some of that is on the coaches, and some is on the players. When you get the rebound with under 35 seconds remaining in the quarter or half, you hold for the last shot. You don't rush the ball up court and take a wild shot. The coaches shouldn't have to tell you that. What they SHOULD tell you is with 5 seconds remaining, and a mediocre FT shooter going to the line (57% on the season), if she misses both of them, we still have 2 fouls to give. There is no way you let the opponent dribble the length of the court and then foul in the act of shooting with .4 seconds left.

Nivar is gonna regret those free throw misses for a while, but the bigger problem is our offense. It has so little flow to it. I like Coach B, but poor offenses has been her calling card at UNC so far. Great recruiter, great defensive coach, really suspect offenses with too many out of control drives to the basket. Another year with not enough shooters on the team.
Rinse and repeat! Getting old!

We have simply got to learn to execute better. Less unforced errors.

We have got to improve on making FT's and Lay ups.

I think our 5 best FT shooters are in order Lanie, Reniya, Ciera, Elina, Taliyah.

I think I would reduce my serious important playing time rotation to 8. players for now

Ciera Toomey, Nyla Harris and Taliyah Henderson at the 4 and 5.

India Nivar and Nyla Brooks at the 3.

Elina Aanisalo, Lanie Grant and Reniya Kelly at PG. (Reniya handles the ball pressure the best)

Use Laila Hull some times for her 3 point shooting ability but basically stick with top 8..

Try to bring Blanca Thomas along some and get her in game shape.

Henderson needs to play more. She needs to be the first player off the bench. She is instant energy. That four guard lineup I hate with Nivar at the 4 would actually work with Henderson at the 4. I know Brooks struggled in the first half, but you still have to play her as well.

I was so excited when I heard we had an entirely new half court offense. Anything was better than the last few years. This one is actually worse. This is last years Hubert offense of running 47 weaves 25 feet from the basket and going 1-on-1 with 5 seconds left on the shot clock.

JMO, Henderson's minutes need to go up to like 25+ minutes per game.

That leaves about 28 min each for Toomey and Harris

We have got to bring Nyla Brooks along but she has to play under control a little better.

I think Nyla B might could possibly play some min's at 2G as well as splitting time at 3F.

Henderson, Brooks and Toomey are potentially our 3 best offensive options. Totally my opinion.

Others players like Elina, Lanie, Nivar and Harris are basically 10 pts a game types that make up a solid team.

It will really lift the team when R. Kelly finds her offensive game. She has the potential to really shoot.

I don't know if RK's shooting is rusty or are knees taking a toll. I hope it is just rust.

Henderson, Brooks and Toomey are all stars in waiting IMO.

Cannot wait until Kate Harpring arrives and becomes the straw that stirs the drink.

False choice: both failures cost us the game. If either Grant caught the inbound and was fouled, Nivar made 1 of 2 (or Henderson made 1 of 2) we would have won, all things equal. In fact, take your pick, any failure in this game that took at least 1 point off the board cost us this game.

CB subbed in Grant (81%) and Aarnisalo (80%) to go along with Harris (75%), Nivar (58%) and Kelly (69% in few attempts this year but 86% last season) for that last possession. she took Henderson (44%) out who just bricked two, and Toomey (74%). So that is roughly the best FT shooting team and ball handling team we could field, unless you bring in a cold and inexperienced Zubich or Barker.

Nivar handled the inbound pass for a reason: so she would not be the one fouled. She is a good passer. Kelly's pass back to Nivar was a mistake in my opinion; I would bet money that was not the call made.

I did not like the rotation used to start OT:

Harris, Aarnisalo, Kelly, Grant, Nivar IIRC?

Who is going to make jump shots?

Henderson had given the tired sign, so understandable she was out. But I would have preferred Hull or Brooks over one of the guards, and maybe Toomey for Harris, so we have some good perimeter shooters in.

In general, it is hard to play Aarnisalo and Kelly at the same time when Elina is having an off shooting day and Kelly is in a season slump. One can facilitate and that is a plus for the team. But nether is showing off guard capabilities right now.

Nivar had 7 TO's and just 1 steal. 3 of 10 shooting , 3 of 6 FTs. Not a good day, though she was not the only one.

Louisville clearly tried to follow the Texas game plan and dog us on the perimeter at every opportunity. It was successful at times. we tried to counter with some 4 and even 5 out play at times to open up driving lanes, which worked at times, but definitely did not at others. Once those drives started, too much hero ball and not enough looking for open teammates. We repeatedly waited until we were buried and in trouble to look for a pass. Or just simply turned it over.

And when we did have a perimeter shot without driving or cutting, we often had no one within 15 feet of the basket creating zero chance for an offensive rebound.

Breakout game for Henderson. Pleasantly surprised she looks so healthy and confident on that leg.

Late to this thread, but good gracious that last 30 seconds and OT was hard to watch. Did Nivar get Space Jam’d and have all of her basketball skills drained from her body or something? She just killed the momentum. Also why have Henderson on the bench the first 4 minutes of OT after going 5-5 in regulation?
