NIL brought attention to the notion that universities were just stacking away profits from their athletics programs. Apparently, they weren't, at least most weren't. Now athletic departments have to find millions more to compensate players in order to remain relevant in sports. NIL is no doubt going to start costing the every day student more money, as athletic programs look to the universities' general fund to offset their short falls. Additionally lower tiered sports will have their budgets slashed (or the sport will be dropped entirely), drying up the chance for many more students to earn possible athletic scholarship. In short, the athletics arms race is going to continue driving up the already astronomical expense of attending college as an actual student.

There's a double edged sword caveat to all of this to all of this too in that the athletics programs have always been a great marketing tool for universities. Being good at a major sport draws the attention of many potential students. Now, being a young fan of a good team is going to directly cost that young fan more money if that's where they end up deciding to go to school.
