A guy who knows LSU/Louisiana, a proven HC, a winner. The 'name' hire didn't work well for them. I wouldn't call it a head scratcher.

it is just not a exciting hire. The problem with hiring a coach at this stage and I include us in the same stage is that to land a lot of recruits that have already committed or that have a strong lean your way, you need to make a hire that is impressive, that is sexy.

I don't agree with it but that is the case with a lot of these recruits. I get the hire and think it is probably a good hire for them, it just makes me yawn.

Proven? <div>
</div><div>In 11 years at North Texas, he has one title, one 2nd place finish, three 3rds, and five 4th place finishes in the Sunbelt West. Not the Sunbelt Conference, the Western Division of the Sunbelt. Overall record in the Sunbelt Conference? 91-88.<div>

they've been better than they have been for a long time. Only 2 NCAA appearances for Indiana St. since Larry Bird, first conference title in 15 years at Northern Illinois, first Sweet Sixteen in 8 years at Purdue then another the next year. He's at least got some promise. What has Johnny Jones got? An 11-year history of .500 basketball in the Sunbelt.

Since 2007, he is 61-43, won the conference once, went to the dance twice and played in the conference tourney championship game 4 times. North Texas has been to the dance 3 times in its history...Jones has two of those in the last 5 years. He's also a previous head coach.<div>
</div><div>Not sure you can totally attribute all those accolades to Ray in the places he's been.</div>

He's won the school only conference title, owns two of the three NCAA births that the school has, and has played in the conf. tourney champ game 4 times in 6 years. He certainly has been trending up for N. Texas. <div>
</div><div>ETA: He also owns 5 of the school's 9 20 win seasons.</div>

but it really has nothing to do with Ray. It has proven time and time again that nothing is certain in NCAA basketball. Much less predictable than football. Only sure thing in NCAA basketball right now is Calipari.

I don't knock coaches in mid major conferences when their record is average or so.
I value if they have overall improved the program both on and off the court.

He has improved the program. He has gotten them to the conference tourney final a lot.

There are very very few mid major programs that can dominate their conference every single year.

I also barely value if a mid major coach has pulled great recruits or not. I don't expect mid majors to get elite recruits, so why knock them for not getting elite recruits? That's never made sense to me.

A midmajor coach may be at a school that doesn't emphasize basketball. He may have a small budget. He may have a ****** arena and facilities. Etc etc etc.
What matters is if he will fit at the new school or not.

On paper, he fits a lot better than 34's love interest that just bolted for tcu.
