I know the head of the alumni club down here

And he said they were giving free ones to the students. Most of the coonasses he talked to don't care for Tampa, wanted to go to Orlando.

When will the bowls realize that an overachieving team with a smaller fan base that finishes strong sells more tickets than a big name team that would rather be somewhere else? For example, Vandy has sold more tickets to the B-Ham bowl than UGA has sold to the Gator.

I'm sure there's more to it though (ie, TV ratings).

Level of competition on the field comes into play as well I'd imagine

Well just go to Orlando and drive the 70 miles to Tampa on game day. That closer then driving from Jackson to Starkville.

Ticket sales are important to bowls, but not as big of a deal as you would think...the reality is that with corporate partners and TV contracts, how well a team sells an allotment of tickets is less important to the bowl. Name recognition of the team will garner better TV ratings and better advertising opportunities.

Ticket sales are a bigger deal to the city hosting the game. It's very good for the local economy.

Yeah, and you gotta think LSU is:

1) Disappointed to be in the Outback Bowl anyway.

2) Going to be playing without Mettenberger.

I'm not sure how excited I would be about driving to Tampa if we were looking at playing a game without Dak. No knock on Damian.

Not surprised. Its a symptom of success......

They go to a bowl game every year. They routinely compete for BCS bowls, conference championships, and NCs. For them, the outback is a disappointing year.

Hopefully one day soon going to the liberty will be a disappointment for our fans and maybe one day the outback will be too.

Bingo....

. I'm sure there's more to it though (ie said:
Ticket sales are nice but name recognition translates into TV ratings which translates into advertising dollars which rules the day.

More importantly I think, how many years in a row do you want to drop a couple grand on a bowl game. I think college football is reaching the same point with a lot of it's fans as the NFL, where they've squeezed most of what they can get out of the fans. TV's just too good of an alternative now for most people. If you talk about paying for two season tickets, travel to the games, and hotel rooms, you're already at a chunk of money. Take a fan base like LSU which has pretty much one big road/showcase each year and a bowl game, and it's sort of amazing they sell the tickets they do.

Did you all notice that they had Ole Miss ahead of Miss State in the conference standings to the top right. Someone should let them know that State beat Mississippi.
