and that is what do you do when a kid suffers an injury that will likely remove his contributions to your school for 2 years or more? I understand he could redshirt and provide minimal playing time redshirt freshman year but that could hurt when the position you are signing is in need of immediate playing time.

I understand that thought, but I also think it would be interesting because I believe coaches would be hesitant to offer too many early scholarships. They wouldn't want to risk having their Plan Bs have the chance to jump on an early signing period and take a spot later that they could've used for a Plan A that decided to wait.

I think it would be interesting to see an early signing period. Texas would be done with recruiting each year by July just about. I think most players would end up waiting for the late period though, and you wouldn't have nearly as many early commitments really until after the early signing period.

As I said before, I don't think there is a real solution to the number game unless you open up the limits some. Especially in the SEC where the competition is at another level, coaches are always going to be exploiting the loopholes that exist. That's why LSU and Alabama oversign and then cut players that aren't getting it done. It's the only way to minimize the rebuilding years that fans get really impatient about these days.

The fans and our lust for winning create the monster.

I don't know the numbers, but I'm guessing most schools send out more than 100 "offers" each year, unless they have a process of waiting until really late in the game to make an offer.
All schools offer more that a 100 but most are 'conditional.' Problem comes when the kid 'commits' and the school 'accepts' ... then 8 months later when someone better comes along and the school dumps the kid.

And it's not just an OM thing. Why don't OM and MSU set up a little farm system to keep good players in state? The way I understand it, we've got a really good Community College system that both schools could use to sign and place these players. Supposedly, the person who was most pissed off about Houston's little over signing scheme wasn't Mullen, but Saban becausehe knew he couldn't do the same thing in Alabama.
