What a mess.

No leadership at all. Having to realign 12 weeks into your new improved alignment. Teams throwing games to get better playoff positions. Teams getting higher seeds with worse records and losing to teams under them. It's time for the Big Four to leave.

That’s just as terrible if not worse.

Geez just play public ball already. You’re not going to get shot at Lanier or whatever. They’ll be police everywhere.

Unfortunately for the MAIS, it needs the big 4 money.

As a product of the MPSA, this is some bravo sierra. Shut it down and just do it like Alabama does it. Foxtrot.
Alabama recently adopted the Arkansas model, which is the model that would work best in Mississippi.

Start them off where they fall. If they win a certain percentage of their games or make the semifinals of the playoffs, move them up a class in that sport. You could have something like MRA playing 7A football and volleyball, Prep playing 7A baseball, etc. It would be awesome.

New districts for the MAIS football season next year!

There will be 6 total championships

2 in 3A (top 4 teams, then next 12)
2 in 2A (top 8 teams, then next 12)
2 total for 8 man (2 12 team brackets)

Just make it 5A
1A - 8 man
5A - the big 4 and bump 3 or 4 up with them

if you wanna have 2 in 5A then ok

Why not just have a 4-team "Class 4A" for the Big 4, and then just structure it like normal for everyone else?

Yeah, I know it's awkward to have a "state championship" for just 4 teams, but so what?

That’s essentially what it is, except worse. One of them will slip into D2 and act like they’ve done something.

All options are terrible except the Big 4 playing public.

So if St. Joseph or whoever pulls an upset and gets into the top 4, they have to play for a state championship with the other 3 Big 4 instead of competing with their peers ... and all of their peers compete with for a "championship" against that Big 4 who got upset? Who wants this?

What a cluster17. This should be simple. Class A is the big 4. Class B is 5-20, split into north & south divisions. Scheduling arrangement where each Class B team plays 1 Class A team in a rotating basis. This gives Class A 7 guaranteed games & each Class B team 8 guaranteed games & only 1 mandatory beat down. Do what you want with Class C D & E. But only 1 champion per classification.

Out of curiosity in public schools, just how many teams from each district get into the playoff?

I grew up in the A- AA-AAA era of MPSA. We (Copiah) moved up to AAA my 7th grade year. It was rough, especially in basketball vs Prep, JA, MRA, Parklane and Woodland Hills every year. Add in Hillcrest with Jack Little et al my senior year. We won 1 conference game (against MRA, go figure) in my last two seasons. Prep beat us by an average of 40 points my senior year.
These pussies today don't know how good they have it.

You’re a big part of what’s wrong with Mississippi. As bad as the Big 4 boosters. You are them. Accept reality and be a part of the solution rather than perpetuating the problem.
It’s not totally untrue. When I was at St Al we played public. But with all of the recruiting and scholarships these days, the MHSAA didn’t like teams having players from LA. We had several before scholarships because Tallulah doesn’t have a Catholic school.

I know. But that’s a small price to pay for the payoff. Simply make the multiplier higher, and if a private school wins a title, they move up a classification.

If Prep or whoever wins a 7A title, well then we can revisit this.

4 out of 6 in class 7A, 6A & 5A. 4 out of 5 in the lower classifications. First round is a joke.
I agree most times it is in every sport now. It didn’t used to he this way. They used to have bigger districts like 8 teams or so and the top 2 went to playoffs. Why did they increase to to top 4 and 5 go to playoffs? Does MHSAA get a cut of every playoff gate money? I understand why they increased to 7a in Mississippi is more money for them personally with a whole other state championship in every sport. But what I’m not sure if is if they also get a cut of playoff gate money or not.

It's exactly that, and having players pulled away from their home MHSAA program at the drop of a hat. If there was some way to make them play by the same rules everyone does then fine. The problem is there isn't a way to do that. GOAT assumed something else. He was wrong as usual. The private schools can solve thier own self created problems.

MHSAA (& presumably MAIS) gets a cut of playoff ticket sales. It’s all about the money.

This seems eminently reasonable. Yes, it makes the regular season meaningless, but so what? IT doesn't make it more meaningful to add in teams that just don't belong. If they really wanted to pretend to make it a more meaningful championship, then they could do an "overall" championship like they do in basketball. Let the 4A champ play an overall championship game against the 3A champ. Will be a blowout most years, but will I guess show that they didn't need more teams in their class.

I also think the public school route and slot them where they belong, with essentially relegation/promotion when they are doing better or worse than expected is fine. A straight multiplier won't work in Mississippi because most private schools don't recruit and it will just guarantee they are playing in the wrong class.

Or make the regular season meaningful. Each team plays a home and home game. Top 2 finishers play for the title.

That wouldn't be terrible and would help fill out their schedule. So you'd have 6 games against equal competition and then grab one out of state or public school that's comparable, and then you have just three to fill out with the biggest MAIS schools outside of the big 4 you can find. Could maybe try to add another regular season game since there's no first round game. Might have a scheduling challenge getting that in before other schools have started playoffs though.

I grew up attending a public school and plan to send my kids to public school. One of my favorite memories was when we played a few local private schools in baseball and basketball. We always beat them, and we were an average 1A school. One year, we played one of the nicer schools in Northeast Mississippi, and they would not allow us to use the visitor locker room. "It was being upgraded," so we had to use an old storage room. Our coach said before the game, "Let's give these rich shitheads azzwhopping there mommas should have given them." They never played us again after we won that game.

They just need to grow a pair and play public ball. MAIS is soft.

When I was in Highschool, Prep, ACCS, Canton, Manhattan, McClure was the South AAA. JA did not even have a high school. MRA was AA. The North AAA was Washington, Lee, Pillow, Indianola and one more I can't remember. They should have just left MAIS Mississippi schools only.

They increased to 7A to keep the 5As and small 6As from getting hurt. The population was consolidating around a select few schools in a parabolic fashion.

Every other state implements a multiplier. It's not difficult.

No they didn’t. The enrollment differences in 6A & 5A are ridiculously small. I could easily see reducing 6A to 24 schools (which was probably needed for a long time). But should have just redistributed the other 5 classes to account for 8 more schools. They added 7A to created more playoff games & more money.
