I tried to watch some of that. .....................................................

Damn. No wonder basketball in the south is so ******. Most disorganized, discombobulated, dipshitted looking **** on the planet. Absolutely zero basketball skill being displayed. Seriously, that passes for basketball?

Both benches cleared. Malik was fouled hard on an and 1. Multiple ejections. I think provine lost 2-3 players. Just sad. I was in the bighouse when Provine and Natchez fought. That one was real bad.

Was at the game. Horatio [Malik's dad] stormed out on the court during the melee and was promptly escorted out. The funniest thing to transpire was watching the callaway mom run out on the court with her funnel cake held aloft, then speak her piece[yes sister girl had something to say] and proceed back to her seat at which time she was asked to leave, funnel cake and all! Absolute cluster!

Smh....I will withhold my judgment on the situation but winning over Malik's father will make or break this recruiting project. Saying he is intense, is a gross understatement. Malik never seemed phased. He has the IT.

I wish they would move the championship games from Jackson besides baseball. Rotate the games between State, Ole Miss and Southern.

Horatio is listening now that Stansbury is gone. He wouldnt even consider it before this season. Still a longshot- but at least we are in the game now. Richard Williams stepping in in an advisory role is bridging some gaps and mending some fences

Do you think for a second that MSU, UM or USM would give up their home arena for the last week and a half of the season? The only other options would be to play at Tupelo, Biloxi or Southaven. And none of those are anywhere near centrally located.

How can the entire state not produce a couple teams and coaches that can play quality basketball? Why don't the AD's higher coaches who know how to teach fundamental quality ball from out of state? Youth basketball and high school basketball in Mississippi is pathetic for a state that produces extreme athletes left and right.

My friend, I cant explain it. Mississippi has a few bright spots among big time public school ball but times are changing. Its so dribble drive oriented. Most teams play without a center. 15 years ago, that was unheard of. I guess you would have had to live in central to southwest Ms to understand it. It's an area saturated with athletes. Unfortunately, its the poorest part of the state and amongst the poorest in the USA. Public schools in this area lack resources and leadership. Like I said, over the last 2 years, it had cleaned up, some. Today sets it all back, once again. Both schools will get negative publicity and both will retain the reputation of "inner city" "streetballers" thus, answering the question to why the cycle of "dumbness" continues.

The real question for me is why don't coaches take advantage of this? Just develop a fundamentally sound program and you'll win in MS. Why do they just keep trying to "out-athlete" the other guy? Provine and Callaway would get beat by the top 30 teams in Indiana. It's like they just want to produce the next Monta Ellis instead of playing team basketball.

Retired MHSAA coaches are in MAIS

Most of the great coaches who won championships in the MHSAA have retired and still coach in MAIS. They DEMAND team-oriented ball. I have been privileged to ref in that league for 5 years and it is really a joy. The talent level is not as "FLASHY" as the public schools but the basketball skill-level is far superior with a team-oriented concept. The dribble-drive between 4-people to get the to rim for an "and-one" rarely exists. Fundamental defense and offensive sets are a joy to watch.

The AAU circuit has ruined basketball in my opinion. There is basically no coaching, just a "watch-what-I-can-do" philosophy. And it is carried to the High School teams as well. Heck, there wasn't even any decent coaching in the girls games. South Jones-Canton was a joke and both coaches blew a chance to win because of no plan at the end of each quarter and overtime. And don't get me started about free-throw shooting. No matter what coaches say, they don't even take one minute to actually "teach" someone the art of how to shoot a free-throw. They just tell them to take 50 shots at the end of practice and go shower.

The game has changed a whole lot since great coaches in our state have retired. And it is NOT for the better. That crap yesterday just illustrates my point.

Nailed it. This is the same reason soccer hasn't developed as much as it should in this country and we haven't produced as many top tennis players as we used to. Nobody develops players any more. They just throw them out there to play as many games as they can. This is beginning to change in tennis with the USTA developmental programs that were put in several years ago and we're now beginning to see some promising young US talent come up.

Comparing mhsaa and mais is like comparing a bowling ball to a starfish....should not be mentioned in the same breath. The real reason, MsHighschool basketball suck....its the same answer to the question, Why cant MS education improve? MAIS. Yep. I said it. The reason these schools formed....hate. As a Mississippian, I am embarrassed. Are we the only state to still have two seperate leagues? These public schools would be better if they were more diverse.

I was doing training sessions with Malik at the YMCA in Jackson before I moved across the world this past spring. Horatio wasn't even considering MSU and thought the Rick Ray hire was a joke at the time. I hope his mind has changed. Malik did everything i told him too and pushed himself and I didn't exactly go easy on him. The kid is quick, agile, and has a good head on his shoulders. All he does is watch youtube videos of the greats and try to emulate them in his off time. He needs to put on about 20-30lbs and then he would be unstoppable. He has that competitor's attitude and doesn't get rattled easily at all. My two cents.. I will be really surprised if we get him.

About soccer thats pretty much what I read a couple weeks ago. In Italy they practice like over 1000 hours a year whereas in the US our kids only practice like 400. Over there it is like 4 practices to every 1 game, whereas here it is like 1 or 2 practices a week and multiple games every weekend. Practice is worth growth really develops.

I think it'd be a huge step-forward in quality basketball in MS if the public and private schools played each other. You'd see 2 direct results. The private schools would be forced to get some better athletes and the public schools would be forced to coach better. I went to high school in Ohio and usually the best schools in all sports were the private schools. Why? Because they went out and recruited all the best players to go there and they were all boys schools so they could get away with being classified as the same as a public school of 1200 male and female was even though they had 1200 male and 0 female.

That Ohio private school classification stuff doesn't work in Mississippi. Single-sex schools are put in the classifications of schools that would be double their enrollment.
