and its HOMECOMING. Wow..a leading indicator for a very underwhelming crowd. Nice weather and what, we're taking Kansas for granted?

RU has done a really poor job of pushing the Homecoming angle. Not Big time at all from what I can see. Fireworks? A Band? Fly over? Unveiling the Bowl Game Banner ? Open House at the Hall Center? Anything special?

I get like daily email blasts from the Univ ....but not a thing to excite about this weekend..shame.

A 12:00 start will do that. Hopefully we will get a win that will lead to a rocking' crowd in two weeks when #2 MSU comes to town.

Unfortunately it's a busy day for fall youth sports teams. I know a lot of people who can't make it for that reason, myself included.

Noon start doesn't help. 1-2 record doesn't help either. Bad PR in recent weeks as well.

I can't believe I was offered 4 40 yard line tickets for free and turned them down. I couldn't find anyone else interested either. That's never happened before. Sad.

This is also not true.
Explain these quotes:

Most people think the team stinks . Hard to get excited

We just lost the game most wanted to win more than any other, and looked awful in the process... What did you expect

Boo ******* hoo. Rutgers lost to Penn State and are 1-2. Wahh. The newspapers in NJ print a bunch of negative crap. Wahhh. I'm going to skip homecoming and teach the team a lesson.

Actually, for Homecoming most people don't give a rat's arse about how the team is doing, they come because it's HOMECOMING!

That being said, our tailgate appears to be smaller than usual, but a lot of that is due to the Alumni Marching Band MANDATORY Tailgate siphoning off regular members.

I don't need to explain them they aren't mine. The idea you think we have the worst fan base in the B1G is silly. We obviously aren't at the top but we are very rooted in the middle.

Fair enough. Some in our fanbase are the worst fans in the B1G.
Sure..some are the worst and they are offset by Al. As a whole, if you look at us our fan base is actually quite impressive. Schools like Illinois, northwestern, Purdue have way more history but less support. We are a powder keg..just need the right match.

We are still trying to get rid of 6 tickets for our group. Peripheral fans have no interest in this one.

Just like many other years, the resale market looks weak. You would think the offers on the ticket sale board would go fast given the prohibition on mark ups but if you can get 25 cents on the dollar for a game like Kansas you are probably at about market. Yes MSU, OSU and Nebraska fans will pay more but I would bet most of who are coming for that game already have their tickets.

Happened for decades pre-Schiano and now its happening again. Your tickets are now once again like a contribution! Will be there as always. We shouldn't complain if bumped for parking though...

I am more concerned that Ohio State and Michigan State are not sold out out. That speaks volumes..and I think they should have been sold out before this mess started.

Worse fans?

Name a fan base who has .............
  • endured beatings on a week in and week out basis as long as we have
    • remember a time when we celebrated the little things - like enjoying the cannon firing via field goals?
  • endured a long history of abuse from other schools
    • Miami, VTech, Penn State, Syracuse, BC, UConn ... heck even USF fans gave us crap, USF?!!!!!
  • endured a long history of taking crap from your own state's residents!!!
  • endured crap from our own MEDIA
  • endured a long history of bad administration
  • endured a long history of bad coaches
  • ENDURED A LONG HISTORY OF JUST DOWN RIGHT INEPTITUDE AND INCOMPETENCE
The problem with some people is they've only started supporting Rutgers since 2012 (HINT HINT!!!).

Again - name one fan base in all of college football who have endured all these things!!!

As far as I'm concerned, we are the best fan base in the universe.

Well that kind of depends. What's left? Is it basically just their allotment? We couldn't sell those until we get them back.

The ticket demand even for Big Ten conference games is over-rated. Penn State being the one exception.
I ate tickets for Michigan and Wisconsin games last year and I'm 30 rows behind RU bench.

For Mich State and Ohio St I predict "at best" 50% over face value, @$75 per ticket.

Heck, I can get Jets/Eagles for 120 bucks on StubHub for Sunday game.

Fair enough. Some in our fanbase are the worst fans in the B1G.

I'm getting sick and tired of reading this junk. Many of us have been supporting this team through thick and thin and tend to get grouchy at times. Do you realize we are the oldest college football team in the nation and yet we have:

1. No championships
2. No major conference titles
3. No BCS or major bowl appearances
4. We can count on one hand the number of times we have finished in the top 25.
5. Deal with a state and local media that find it more convenient to ignore us or pile on when perception is bad.
6. Have an historically incompetent athletic department full of lifetime hires that don't know big time sports from big top Pee-Wee (Julie is working on this).

Through all that, we still manage to come back year after year after year and put up with the disappointment. I don't post much on this board and for the most part try not to overreact or pile on. But after the crap we as fans have had to deal with since we got accepted into the B1G led by administrative incompetence, poor coaching, nickel and dime operating procedures and dealing with a local media that would rather see us close up shop and move the team to Vermont, how the hell can some of you dare criticize this fan base?

We have won NOTHING in our history. Our coaching staffs historically have been C level at best. Our University President is more concerned about perception and his future retirement date than the football program. Even our Governor walks around in a ND shirt. For the first time in history we actually have a trained AD who has experience in the job. Yet we are supposed to just smile and say "Go team!" while the losses and bad PR pile up and our ticket prices and parking go up (neither of which I have an issue with btw).

I've been all in with Rutgers athletics, but find it tougher as the years go by. I'm a season ticket holder to football and wrestling and donate a decent amount of cash that could probably go towards a nice vacation in Europe with the family. But I can understand how some can get frustrated. This message board IS NOT THE PROBLEM. Our fans ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. Do we have some jackoffs on this board? Of course... every fan base does. Do some criticize but do nothing to help the situation or donate? Sure. Are we experiencing growing pains as we migrate into the big time with increased costs and prices? Of course. But that is necessary to raise the needed cash to complete. Yet with all that, the fact that we can still get 40 to 50K buts in the seats in an area where there are dozens of other entertainment options while enjoying limited success, I'd say we are doing quite fine as a fan base.

Our fans don't make the hires. Our fans don't call the plays. Our fans don't baby sit these kids. Our fans don't have control of the state legislature. Our fans don't have control over the media. Our fans don't have much influence on the AD office. Perhaps maybe we should be more understanding to those among our base that might be a little grumpy.

With that said, I'm fairly confident we handle Kansas this weekend and get back to 2-2. We have the #1 and #2 teams visiting over the next several weeks. Let's just try and enjoy watching some of the finest teams in the nation in our backyard and pray to god this department can get their sh*t together in the next 3-4 months.

It's a combo of several things.

-Four years in a row of noon kicks (I think) for homecoming suck big time. I almost wish we would forfeit the TV slot.
-Have gotten smoked on our last three homecoming games.
-Our season ended in August with the weekly occurrence of arrests, suspensions, etc.
-We lost to a team that lost to Portland State and lost to a team that got their doors blown off by Temple.

I will be there as always but I can't blame people who don't want to come. We're a bad team that is hard to watch.

Outstanding post.
But why skip homecoming and in some lame attempt to make a statement by saying "I am not going" when the team of players who have done nothing wrong are going to go out there and play for Rutgers? If anything, a show of support from the fans would be a nice gesture on homecoming. All of the people who have been accused of doing something wrong have already been punished.
Do whatever you want to do. I am looking forward to tomorrow. I hope the team continues to improve, because they must improve if they want a shot at winning 6 games or more this season, and I still believe that can happen. I am not writing them off because of the WSU and Penn State losses.

Wisconsin we had horrendous weather for the game. Michigan had bad weather predicted for tailgating and the early part of the game (but the weather cleared out early). All ticket demand for those games disappeared because of the weather.

On another note, two of my group decided to put their OSU tickets for sale together on Stub Hub. They went in 3 days for 3.5 times the face value.

The really sad thing is I know just like thousands of others that the day season tickets arrive is like Christmas. Most of us wait seven long months for football season to begin and now by the end of September people are throwing in the towel.

I have a wedding in Nantucket this weekend that should be a very nice affair but I would trade this weekend in a heartbeat to be at the stadium tomorrow. Do you people forget how much all of us prayed to get into the Big Ten?; How much we wanted RU to play a big time schedule?; to play in a great stadium;? to have a tailgating scene that is the envy of many major colleges?

Nobody ever said this gig was going to be easy. But we asked for it and we got it. We have a solid middle-of-the-road Big Ten team even with Kyle Flood.

You want to help bring us to the next level? Stop bitching and whining and support the program with both your wallets and your fannies in the seats at 11:30 tomorrow.

Well at least I feel better now.
